Still confused about filtering the air

Hi All,

I really can't get my head around this.
I have a grow tent and am setting it up for the first time.

How the hell do I set up the extractor fan?
I have my fan suspended high up in the tent but where does the charcoal filter go?
Does it go on the extractor fans inlet or outlet?

Also is it OK to vent the exhaust out of the tent but into the room the tent is in? In my situation I cannot vent outside.
