Stuck on ppm and nute correlation!!

Hey guys!

Ok so lets say I'm going to be starting a dwc in a 5 gallon bucket using hydroton balls. I have the means and knowledge to control the PH (I actually understand how that works!)
I just have one query... Say for instance I have to put 2.5ml per gallon of my nutes into my solution how do I know how many ppm that should be when I check with my wand?! Will a certain concentration per gallon give a general consistent reading?

Is this a stupid question, sorry if it is but I just wanted to clarify!

I thought I would ask on here as I have ready may threads and you all seem to have heaps of really great experience, many thanks in advance for your expertise.

Budie.

Your ppm level will stay the same thats why you need to increase the amount weekly. Add each nutrient separate check ppm you can get a good idea what each one does

From week 0 to 2 = 0ppm
From week 3 = 100 to 300 ppm
From week 4 and on = 400 and so on.

Just a general guide. Check out my journal entry for a better detail version

Different nutes measure at different ppm's so you'd have to mix up a gallon and see for yourself if you really want to know.

Basically you monitor ppm's to see how your plants are uptaking nutes. If you feed them at say 500 ppm's for example and the next day you check and they've drank 2 gallons of water and your ppm's are 575, then the nute mix is a little too strong and you should top off with plain water to bring the ppm's back down. But if they've drank 2 gallons of water and the ppm's are 425 then they're some hungry girls who ate more nutes than drank water, and you can top off with more nute mix to bring your ppm's back up to 500 or maybe 525 or 550. You want to try to find the sweet spot where they're uptaking nutes and water at about the same rate (ppm's don't fluctuate much).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your replies guys much appreciated. Probably another dumbass question but here goes... So I got my 5gal bucket, the ppm and ph is lookin good but the water level is going down...do I top it up with just regular filtered water or do I have to add nutes again to get the ppm up? Obviously I will be doing a water change and clean once a week so then the water will be changed and fresh nutes added but what about in the meantime?!

thanks in advance for your utter wisdom!

Also ppm usage will vary your pH as well, lower pH reading too strong nute (generally) and higher pH is nutrient soup too weak.. in general you should want your pH to drift slightly upward or stay same as the nutrient strength is appropriate to strain/plant size.

If your ppm's go up & water down, add ph'd water only. If if your ppm's go down add a little nutes with your water. Yes, try to maintain your ppm's & ph when you add water if they are the same when your water level drops. :peace:

Thanks for the advice BBC but that's doesn't answer my last question!
Oh I am sorry, I didn't know it was my obligation to just answer questions?! Maybe try the search button, usually people who ask questions without research fail miserably at growing.

I never said it was YOUR obligation to answer I was just expecting an answer. if you can't say anything nice please don't reply to my threads. I wasn't being nasty as I thanked you for your advice you have jumped the gun a bit I think!chill out! thanks for your reply tripurple much appreciated...BBC if you have any advice I would be happy to listen but please don't be malicious

Im using single 5gal DWC buckets with 10" bucket lids. I use 3 gallons per bucket of strong mix, and add 3 gallons of clean water throughout the week. In flowering it's about 1 gallon a day. I change out bucketwith fresh nutes after third gallon by then EC is about .8 - .9.

Budie: there are no stupid questions so long as you're not putting us on. What I would suggest is that you RTFB to get the background you need. I really wish there was an easier way, but from what you ask I’d suggest refer to the following resources, specifically: Cervantes, Rosenthal and Green. "High Times" magazine also has a feature article on hydro this month you might want to look at.
1. Read: SeeMoreBud’s, “MARIJUANA BUDS FOR LESS- GROW 8 OZ. OF BUDS FOR LESS THAN $100.” It’s a must for beginning dirt gardeners especially those using CFL’s.
2. You might also want to read: Mc McCarthy’s, “GROWING MARIJUANAIt’s another good text for dirt gardeners.
3. Read: Jorge Cervantes’s, “MARIJUANA HORTICULTURE THE INDOOR/ OUTDOOR MEDICAL GROWER’S BIBLE.” It’s great for both dirt and hydro.
4. Read: Ed Rosenthal’s, “MARIJUANA GROWER’S HANDBOOK It’s very complete.
5. “THE CANNABIS GROW BIBLE- SECOND EDITION,” written by Greg Green, is easily a match, if not better than the ones listed above.
6. You should also subscribe to, “HIGH TIMES magazine. Each issue is full of useful information and excellent photography.
7. You might also want to subscribe to www.gardenandgreenhouse.net. It’s free and they offer a monthly news letter that always has a lot of good information, especially for newbies.
8. A lot of local hydroponics stores offer free weekend gardening classes. Admittedly they offer these classes as a means of boosting sales but they also present some good information and they’re frequently taught by experienced gardeners.
All these resources are very well written, well illustrated and packed with information that will answer most of your questions before you know to ask them. Doing your homework before you start to grow by consulting these resources will save you and your plants a lot of stress. These forums are great but often they’re the blind leading the blind and when you do get it from a knowledgeable source they frequently can’t get the information you need to you in a timely fashion. I sincerely hope this helps. HSA

i know what your saying, your asking what nute strength should the top up res be, ie if your circulated mix is the same as your top up res to begin with and its too weak, obviously the top up res has to be stronger than the circulated to make it go up, but how much stronger should it be made untill the sweet spot is found?, i also have no idea about this.. help please

can a diluted mix be added to the controller to raise ec?

Yes you can. I used to add back nute/water mix to try to maintain the "sweet spot", but I've gotten lazy lately and have just been adding water and adjusting ph until the mix gets real weak and then it's about rez change time anyway. But sometimes if it drops too quick I'll just a add back a "hot" mix to bring ppm's back up for a few more days until I can do the rez change. Haven't had any problems so far.
