i have a few fems on 18/6 right now, thinking of switching to 20/4 in order to boost growth. will the gains be noticeable? and will the switch in the light cycle cause any problems (stress?).. i just dont want any hermies or anything

In my opinion the extra 2 hrs really are not worth it. Maybe on certain strains possibly, in general, no. Just my humble opinion though. I even like to go to 14-10 for about 7 to 10 days then 12-12. I think it is more natural.

I think 24-0, or 20-4, Will make your plants work on faster root development, and lil slower plant growth.

18-6 is a nice balance for healthy plant, and root growth.

I usually start with 24-0, then as the plants set in, I shift down to 20-4, then 18-6. Then finally 12-12 for flowering.
