Switching from GH to powder nutrients - Stock tank questions

@spek9

are you able to find Jacks locally or do you have to order it online?

I have looked for both Jacks and Dyno-Gro locally but have not found either
I ordered it online through a Canadian vendor I came across here on RIU (@AquaTerra). Here's his site. Reasonably priced, and only $18 for shipping. That's not bad for several kilos of weight. From the states, I was looking at higher cost for product, an up conversion of ~25% because it's USD, then $70 (USD) for shipping.

That said, I am going into town today, and am going to stop at a couple of places (local agro shops, and the local hydro shop) to see if it is carried or not. I'll let you know!

thanks Spec.

I was even considering a quick trip to Bellingham Washington to find some options but we can't do that now.

My last grow I used Technaflora (made in Mission BC) and was not overly pleased...but not complaining as they were a free sample from the MJ trade show....also picked up a free sample of Diablo nutes (made in Kelowna) which I may try next winter.

For my summer grow I'm using my old proven stand-by of GH MaxiBloom & Calmag......I found the trick to powder nutes is to use an old food blender to mix them up, much better than a manual mix

If I'm not mistaken, the shop I mentioned is in Mission (I'm about three hours away from there, driving time), and he does have walk-in.

If you like, I'll happily cut some of the powders up, and send you enough for a half dozen gallons or so if you'd like to try before you buy.

Either way, I'll let you know if the products I ordered are ubiquitous, or unavailable locally (if it is available, I'll also PM you with my location so you can get an idea based on that whether it may be available in other areas that are in your proximity).

Technaflora is like 15 feet from my store lol. If you can still find it GH Maxi works good, its being relabeled so can't get it in Canada atm. There's awlays the good all 20-20-20 and 10-30-20 and MKP for a booster in week 3-6 once a week.

The Maxi is pretty corse powder vs Jacks or Plant Prod which are super fine but gets super dusty handling them so a mask is a good idea.

Damn, you guys have it rough ordering stuff with those insane shipping costs. I've ordered six 5kg bricks of coco and had it delivered in two days with free shipping.

That depends on the price you paid for the items. If I made full MSRP on products I sell I could do free shipping all day long. If you came into a hydro store in the Vancouver area and bought something locally you'd think online pricing is a rip off.

I'm the type to do extensive research on pretty well everything. This week, after eight years of indoor growing, I'm finally delving deep into nutrients.

After a private discussion with another forum member, I'm switching from GH Flora series to powdered soluble. For my first test, I'm going with Jack's 5-12-26, which contains all the micro nutrients. I'll also use Calcium Nitrate, and MKP in flower.

I'm currently growing in Sunshine #4 peat-based medium. Veg is 2x4x5', 400W MH, humidity is ~50%. Flower is 4x4x6.5', 1000W HPS, humidity ~40%. Both tents run at 78F during lights on. I start clones/seeds in one gal pots, and put them in their final three gal pots at about week five of veg. In total, I veg for eight weeks in a perpetual, where I harvest plants every five weeks.

Currently, I use two 15 gallon drums to mix a veg and flower batch of GH. I'd like to stick to something similar with the new nutrients.

My understanding is that the CalNit shouldn't be mixed with the MKP in the stock tank due to precipitation. I'm wondering how long that takes to happen. For example, it usually takes me a little over a month to go through the 15 gallons of my flower GH mixture (a little longer for veg). Too long I'm sure?

If mixing the CaNit and MKP together isn't an option, I'll add a smaller third tank, mix the MKP in the small one, a large drum for veg and the other large for flower. When needed, I can supplement the flower mix with some of the MKP mix at time of use.

Does that sound logical?

Can anyone else who pre-mixes relatively larger batches of nutrients up front in stock tanks share some insight or tips on how they manage things?
I'm a coco grower, never grown in soil. Have used gh...mc....jacks.

I only supplement with the bad calcium - calimagic in my case - if needed. Coco can be a little more demanding in that area. Ca and mg.

Consider a combination of Jacks 5-12-26 and/or 10-30-20 to accomplish your target NPK and other ratios/PPM numbers.
You may find no need for MKP.

I've heard....Soil growers may not need cal-nit....or only very little, as long as their soil is providing enough N and Ca.

Chem Gro
Masterblend
Have jacks like powders as alternatives.

Some Jacks techno.

GH MaxiBloom has changed its formula twice over the last few years but haven't mentioned it on their web site or on the packaging.

On the left is the original (very course) and on the right was the next version (more of a fine powder)

This is the newest version (purchased a year ago)...looks like koolaid and it's quite fine powder as well and mixes up very eaisly
Also the same packaging as the original

BTW: funny thing about Technaflora is none of the shops retail it here in Vancouver....the closest I have found it was in Surrey

They were never popular here maybe a little in the early 2000 for Thrive Alive and Vietnamese growers use to buy lots of Blossom Booster. Rootech was the main rooting gel that I used to sell. They are however really popular in some US states and in Europe. They use to put on lots of music festivals in the US.
