Tafbang Ceiling Light Grow Part 2

I agree with the point about people eventually having it nailed down, but they had to get to that point somehow, no doubt through improving on their original setup, but no doubt these people would still improve upon what they have if something (cost-effectively obviously) gave them improvements. I just dont understand Tafbangs willingness to just leave it as it is, because for a few €/$/£ he could make it logistically so much easier for himself and grow alot more bud without a huge technique (if you could call it that) change.

I think I may have been involved in that hermie argument, and I think you thought I was arguing against you, but I wasnt. I said hermies from females way overdue will produce feminised seeds, that was all I said, but I think you thought I was encouraging him to make hermies and grow hermie seeds, which I wasnt.

I couldn't guess if it was the same thread as I was referring to or not. With all the unstable 'flavor of the month' strains that people here grow hardly does a day or two pass by without there being a hermie thread or two. I just know in one the person was tickled pink to find seeds.

I do remember another hermie thread where in an attempt to get the amber trichomes that oddly enough so many people inaccurately believe to be what is best the person grew their plants too long and ended up with bananas and wanted to know if they would let them pollinate their plants if they would get feminized seeds and I said at that late date their plants might be beyond being able to be pollinated and even if not even if they didn't take them soon there was no promise that they would get viable seeds .... and that when Rodelization, or the Soma method, is used normally there will be another crop of females early in flower and you would collect the bananas and use the pollen to pollinate that crop of females or store the pollen in a way to keep it viable long enough to get another crop of females ready to get knocked up.

There are so many hermie threads and individual hermie messages within other threads that its difficult to remember who said what to who about what and when it was said and why.

That is just one of the joys of many modern mutt crosses that are more unstable than many fault lines around the world or very, old dynamite sweating nitroglycerin.

This thread has been somewhat intertaining, truly taf, but hey!, come on by I'd be happy to guide you thru a real CFL grow:hump:

Hey man, I got a question..... How much area does one of those lights cover? I have one of those fixtures and I just need to get a bulb, and want to use it for veg... mainly for clones and such in party cups, +rep if you can help me out :)

(typically I wouldn't hijack threads with one of my ??s but considering the circumstances....)

Yeah, I should not post a photo, it's against the rules, just offering a honest suggestion to help tafbang out...even w/what cfl's taf is using, the bud could do much better w/some help and adjustments...

CFL area of coverage I don't no, I use over 250watts/plant, however my grow closet is 3.5x4x9 w/+1200watts of CFL and +80,000 lumen. You can snatch a 65watter at home depot for $16 for veg & flr, hope that helped

Are you talking about total actual wattage or total equivalent wattage? If equivalent wattage then what is the total actual wattage?

Those are actual watts, not equivalent incondesant watts
Do you see that as being efficient when compared to HID lighting?

I didn't do the math to figure out what it would equate if a HPS but it takes 5.3 125 actual watt CFL grow lights, not the pigtail home lighting lights but actual CFL grow lights, to equal the light of one 400-watt HPS. That's 662.5-watts burned to get the same amount of light you get from one 400-watt HID HPS.

Yeah, that does actually help. Thanks man, I guess I'm going to homedepot to get some lights :) (never used CFLs, so this should be a learning experience)

My plans are to do a comparison grow w/a hps vrs CFL watt for watt grow, same strain, same organic nutes in an aero-hydro grow this late spring, just riding out this re-grow flwring of Colombian Gold and Blue Widow for the moment

I am assuming that you would be using different K CFL lights for vegging and flowering so I hope you do the same with your HID lighting and used a 6500K MH for flower and an HPS, preferably with some added blue light spectrum for flower so you have a valid comparison.

I only tried CFLs once, just so people could not claim I talked bad about them without every trying them, and I did not by any means skimp on the wattage or use the wrong K bulbs, but in the end I was unimpressed. My 400-watt HID worked better for me from day one through harvest.

Now it was not a side by side comparison, but it was the same strain used with the CFLs as the following HID crop. I won't claim that to be definitive proof but everything I have ever read about lighting, when comparing CFLs and HID lighting, has said that when it comes to grams produced to watts used HID lighting wins out every time.

I can see where there are circumstances where CFLs are the way for some people to go. But that is only, in my opinion, when there is some limiting factor, some restriction, that makes it impossible to use HID lighting. To me if there is any way that someone can make HID lighting work for them, and as long as they use a 400-watt HID, minimum, it is the only way to go at this point in time.

There are some good deals to be found on HID lighting these days. HTGS offers a 600-watt HPS for $199.95. Now they call it an HPS but it is a digital ballast and it is the same digital ballast used with their 600-watt MH/HPS package. If you pay for the MH/HPS package or just add a MH to the HPS package they do sort of bend you over for the price of the MH bulb, but you can purchase the $199.95 deal and find a 6500K MH bulb cheaper than what HTGS charges and have a heck of a setup for not all that much of an investment. You can do the same with their 400-watt HPS deal, that I believe is like $184.95 and from a site I buy bulbs from you can get a 6500K MH bulb for $20.00 and with shipping to my area it comes to $28.00 and that still puts you well below the HTGS MH/HPS package.

Now those are Digital Greenhouse ballasts. They might not be a Hortilux but they are still darn good quality. I have used one for several years and so far it's been flawless, and now they offer a 5-year warranty on the ballast, 3 years complete, 2 years pro rated, so that's not bad.

Thanks for the great input Brick Top...When I do run the comparison grow, I hope to have a combo MH and HPS 400watter in play...I use 6500k CFLs for veg. and mix-up the spectrum abit when using my 2700-3000k CFLs. I try to have at least 20% of 6500k mixed in w/2700k, I never exceed more than a 2:1 ratio...

Mostly why I grow w/CFLs to prevent dealing w/heat issues, venting heat out of my little grow closet is impossible unless I drill thru 12 inches of concrete or thru my wooden stairwell or steps...so I just push in fresh air in from the adjacent room thru the closets louvered door...Another reason I enjoy using CFLs is that it is so important to move the lights daily during the latter part of flowering stage....not to mention I can get the lights real close to the colas, 3-4" close in fact...

I've seen many great grows w/mh & hps light set-ups, but on the other hand I have also seen many great grows w/CFLs, LED's w/cfls, T-5's and T-8's....as far as watts/gram or gram/watts or the amount of oz's after harvest, it's not important to me as long as I can grow Grade A bud that's awesome in taste, smell and of course potentancy.....but I am looking foward to see 1st hand the comparison. What I hope for is combined light set-up grow after the comparison grow...thanks again...:hump:

You probably didn't get much from the thread, but you'd only help by donating money. I know how to grow

"i know how to grow"

we all want to help you "know how to grow" a little better.

our impatience gets the better of us and we rib you a little. i personally apologize for doing so previously.

but we really want to help you do what you're already doing even better.

please consider some of the good advice posted on your threads.

i love you, taf.

For the heat point...will the equivilent wattages of CFL's and HID's in an enclosed space not produce the same net heat eventually? It wont be as intense or focused, but it will build up was what I thought.

Yep, it will, though lots of people don't think so. It's like a birthday cake with 5 tiny candles or one with 30 tiny candles. Each only put off a small amount of heat, but it is not like no matter how many you add the max heat is what one would be even though they are all the same since. Heats builds up even if it comes from multiple lower temperature sources.

It's just that normally people do not use enough CFL or other types of fluorescent lights to equal HID lighting so they run much less light and they have lower temperatures.
