Oh yes my friend,

HPS will make a much more sexy lady, they will also produce better buds than CFL's because their light output is high in the orange/red spectrum.

Definitely worth it if all you need is a ballast, I would go with the HPS if I were you.

How many plants and how big of a growing area are you working with?

HPS is definatley the better bet, yield-wise. however i have found that using an HPS above the plants, with several flourescent, or CFL bulbs on the side make for a better light distribution and can help fluff up those outer buds and branches.

HPS all the way.

If you buy an HPS ballast, Sunmaster makes 600w and 1000w metal halide conversion bulbs.
Runs on HPS ballasts, and gives you the ability to pop your HPS lamp in come flowering time.
Growing HPS exclusivley works well, but by using metal halide and HPS together you are able
to grow at capacity.

Good luck!

ive heard t-5 grow fluorescents work great for vegging.......then pop on an hps for flowering.......fluorescent lights alone will not do the trick....you must use hps at least for flowering.......

No one could tell you... You would have to know the strain, what nutrients youre feeding, how big the plants are when you start to flower, how many plants... But is this going to be your first grow?
