This might sound like a stupid question but....

After you germinate a weed seed, do you plant it up or down? I'm not sure if the thingy that pops out is the plant or the roots.

there is mixed answers for this one

alot of people say you should plant the tap root up as it curls when it starts to grow, so if you face it down the thing curls up then has to start growing down, this using more energy

and if you plant the root facing up it curls down and grows straight down

this will probs start a big debate, and just for the record i just throw the seeed in any old way, it will find its way no bother

As Jimmy said, there are multiple techniques people use. Imho, the best way to start seeds is:

Always use seed starter soil or a similar inert medium for seeds. Wet the soil with either pure water or a half strength Maxicrop solution until a handful drips a few drops when moderately squeezed. Fill the cups, tapping them on the counter to settle the soil. Don't press the soil down when filling pots, you could pack it too tightly. Poke a toothpick into the center of the soil. Carefully place the root into the hole. Very gently press the soil around the root, so you end up with the seed shell sitting on top of the soil with no root visible. Cover the cup with plastic wrap and put a rubber band around the top. Use a knife to cut 4 finger-sized holes around the edge of the wrap. Place the cups under CFL's and keep an eye on them. Take the plastic wrap off as soon as the plant starts sloughing the seed shell or if it bumps into the plastic. There can be air blowing on the cups as long as there is condensation on the bottom of the plastic wrap.
