I'd like to put a thread together to detail some unconventional tricks to help your outdoor grows be more successful!
If you have any ideas or pointers, please contribute!! Nothing obvious (ex.put up chicken wire do deer don't eat them)!!
Repurposing:
1. Free 3Gal Water Jugs: If you have cats, the empty "cats pride" kitty litter containers painted black or camo make excellent water jugs! They hold almost 3 gallons each and two can easily be carried by one person.
2. Nutrient rich veg water: If you have an aquarium, save the water from your water changes!! It's high in available nitrogen, and your plants will just love it while in veg!!
3. Free replacement for expensive water holding crystals: In dry climates, cut up diapers, natural sponges, or egg cartons and line the bottom of your pots with them. They do a great job helping your soil retain it's moisture between waterings.
4. 4th grade science class germinator: Cut a two liter bottle 3/4 of the way up and invert the top half into the bottom. Pull a paper towel through the top into the bottom to act as a wick. Line the top with paper towels and fill the bottom with clean water. Place your seeds on the paper towels and cover with a damp layer of towels. Works the same as the zip lock/paper towel method, but requires less maintenance
5. Protected clone/seedling transport: I forget where I read this, so I'm not sure who to credit with the idea. Take a 20 oz bottle and cut the bottom off (save the top). Paint the bottom black and use it to start seedlings or root clones. Once ready for your plot, tape the top half back on and throw it in your pack, they'll be well protected for your hike!
DIY Solutions
1. Mouse trap rain buckets: Its always a good idea to have buckets @ your plot to collect rainwater! Try digging the bucket into the ground so only the top inch or so is above grade. It will collect the same amount of water, but will also catch the mice who have been stripping your bottom branches, they can't resist the water (do not water with icky dead mouse water.
2. Recycled dolly guerilla cart: replace the wheels on an old dolly with pnuematic tires, affix a basket (made of wood or metal) to the bottom of the dolly as wide as three or four of your preferred water jugs. Paint it camo and hide it in the brush, it's much easier to get your supplies and water to your plot on wheels!
General tips & pointers
1. As long as you have proper draining soil, water in ground plants daily! Your plants will thank you!
2. There is no single "right way" to grow this wonderful plant. While some methods may work better, what works for Peter may not work for Paul. With that being said, there is always something more to learn or something you can adapt to make your methods both easier and more effective!
