To use or not to use Mylar

Does anyone know how much extra light actually gets to the plants when using mylar?

I have a medium sized (12' x 12') room and am debating putting it up. The issue is my landlord. He's ok with my grow, but I've seen rooms with mylar covering and they have a sinister/underground look to them which would probably scare my landlord and cause problems. If its not a lot of light I may just skip that step.

From what I understand is it's only a few percentage points more reflective than flat white paint.

When I remodel my grow area, I'm going without the mylar, which I'm using now - I'm going to use bright white paint. The mylar I use is too much like a mirror, and won't reflect the light evenly. I compare the white paint to a snow covered field on a sunny day - Its blinding light wherever I look, but its not like looking right at the sun. Know what I mean?

On the other hand, you might have mylar that looks more like those emergency blankets from wal mart? I guess that sort of mylar would work good too....
