Hi
I have a small fungus gnat issue,
Just a few adults hovering about
I have laid out some sticky pads and have caught a few
I was just wondering if anybody has tried tobacco juice as an effective treatment for the larvae before I spend money on another product?
Any help welcomed killing these pesky critterr
Thanks in advance . . .

info...........................

Fungus Gnats

Fungus gnats like to feed on roots of the plants and organic matter. Adults and larvae live in moist, shady areas. The adults lay there eggs on top of the soil, near the base of the stem and takes about 4 days to hatch. The larvae will start by eating the root hairs of the plant then working their way up the plant, Fungus gnats like to eat organic matter so they will be stealing away nutrients from your plants, so its best to get rid of them completely. Plants growing in rock wool are more prone to getting a more severe infestation than plants growing in soil. If your plants are affected during late flowering or close to harvest, please try to use the safest means of control to be safe to your health.

Prevent and Control

Prevent indoor entry of gnats by making sure there is no open windows open without screens on. Aug is a bad time for them as they are worst that time of the year.

Put sticky traps on the soil surface to trap the gnats

Put potato slices on the surface of the soil. The larvae like it and will be drawn to it.. After about 4 to 5 days, remove the potato slices with the larvae. To get rid of them you can do a lot of things like either use a NO pest strip, neem oil or putting sand on the surface of the soil will suffocate the eggs and get rid of them as well. Tobacco juice kills them, and works well for re-occurrences!

They can be in or on the soil and can fly. In order to get rid of them you can use neem oil, sand or perlite on the surface again kills them, and no pest strips catch the ones that fly. A chemical product called Zone works very well and is very powerful and works well in Hydroponics/Aeroponics!
Other Products which can be used in Hydroponics/Aeroponics and soil are:

Safer Yard & Garden Insecticide

GNATROL( used in Hydroponics/Aeroponics in the water as well as soil),
Safer Sticky Stakes,
TR-11000 Pyrethrum.
PERMETHRIN dust
Mosquito Dunks

Organic Control

Natrasoap
Pest Oil
Neem Oil
Hot Pepper Wax
Doc's Neem Pest Soap
Sticky traps
Safer's Insecticidal Soap
Neem Oil
Neem 2

Tobacco juice helps to kill off the larvae but there is such a thing as Tobacco Mosaic Virus...............
make a hydrogen peroxide solution (4 oz per gallon) and use it to water every time.
H2O2 will not harm your plants and it will kill off the fungus gnat larva if you use it religiously :)

the best organic method is applecider vinegar. they hate the stuff dilute 1:2 cups vinegar to water ration for a solution of 1.25% and spray on foliage. also leaving a small cup filled to about 3-4 ounces near your plants will keep them away. if your feeling creative take an empty 2 liter bottle cut of the top where it starts to become a cylinder not where it tapers, invert andcut a small notch on the top part you removed and reinsert into the cylinder part of the 2 liter. fill with beer diluted with 1:1 ratio water to beer till it is 1.5 inches from the bottom of your inverted pouring spout. this trap works great i put it by my beer tap no more fruit flies. after 2 weeks you should have a 2 liter filled with about 30 or so gnats. dont keep it to close to your crops keep it about 3-5 ft away

Haven't had gnats in my garden, but have at my old place with roommates. But I would put about a Tbsp of dish soap in a shot glass then fill the rest with vinegar and mix it. They're attracted to the vinegar and the soap coats them so they can't get out. Not sure how it would work around your plants.

im trying the tobacco juice for spider mites right now. i hope it works out for you as well with ur fungus gnat problem. i live in arizona so its always a heat issue here somehow.. ugh

If you drop the humidity and try to keep it a lil drier they'll end up leaving... Also the yellow sticky paper will help you rid them

Keeping the grow room clean & dry will work you wonders though

Try a organic product called TANLIN you drench your soil using 10 drops per 10
litres and when the gnats eat it, their stomachs explode, killing them instantly - I have had the greatest success with this stuff
