Today's strains compared to 80's-90's strains

So I think a lot about trying to find strains that are similar to various highs I can remember from the early late 80's and early 90's... Weed I used to buy back then that was considered fairly shitty weed, but that's probably because they were just shitty grown sativas? Like I can specifically remember picking through really shitty fluffy bags that were not brown like compressed brick weed, but definitely really mostly leaves - getting excited if it had a good nugget or two in a quarter bag. But this stuff still got us plenty good and high after smoking half a joint or so. I remember not even knowing about stuff that would give you a strong body buzz or make you sleepy, or tasted like fruit until later in the mid 90's. All the weed tasted like skunky, woody weed. My friends had better dealers though so I do remember being jealous of their denser nuggets.

What strains do you go to today to find that old school buzz? Honestly I find any good sativa dominant strain pretty close, but more rarely do I find one that has that super intense cerebral high where you feel really confused and like you're watching your life as a movie, and everything just somehow is experienced from an entirely new perspective if that makes sense? I just smoked an unknown sativa dom strain that I'm growing now that is pretty close, and it makes me very talkative ha ha...

Any strain recommendations?

Those are just a few preservationists that keep older strains alive. I would personally begin there.

Irie genetics. Finished one of his Arise crosses with a white widow, Called storm shadow.. extremely heady and speedy and depending on the mood it will create anxiety and paranoia. Definitely a strain you enjoy when you don't have to “act normal” around people outside your circle.

Have you tried to let one flower a little longer? Typically that "race" comes from an unfinished sativa.

I picked up a clone of SLH (Green House Seeds) from a friend in LA about 4 years ago. It's a staple in my garden. It's a bit of slow vegetator and leans toward the indica side of growth/structure. However, it's a pretty even hybrid; effect wise. It smells so good; lemons of course. Solid yielder. 9.5 to 10 weeks. It tested at 21.5% when med cards were allowed to sell to dispensaries in Oregon. The dispensary where we sold it called back the next day saying they'd buy all that we have. They said it's the best thing they have in the store. Now, there is a lot of negativity and sniping at Green House. People say their a sham, but I wonder if that's more about the seed industry in Europe. I question how many seed sellers are stuffing sacks with shitty beans.

If I wanted to get an old school strain, I'd get the Northern Lights #5 x Haze from Sensi Seed Bank. I'll never forget the shit. Off to the races.

I would rec Dominion Seeds, AK bean brains (he's had beans frozen since the 80s) he raves about his TK x NL5/Haze, Coastal/Cicada, Gooeybreeder, Bodhi, Snow High, Swami, Top Dawg all have a lot of old stuff.

Agree on the NL. I have NL crosses from coastal, Ak, and bodhi. There's old NL floating around.

Any opinions on AK Bean brains MTF?

I remember the good buds from back then. But like everything, you may remember the experience but hard to compare many years later. My old hippie friend had some blueberry, skunk, NL, white widow and a couple others that were top notch back then.

Long story short, the old hippie is still around and still grows the same old school cuts he has for decades.

After smoking the new high thc hybrids that drip resin and terps, the old school strains I sampled recently from the old hippie were as i remember but leaps and bounds poorer grade than many new modern strains.

Sometimes time can distort, places, people, and pot and the fond memories are just that. I grabbed a bag and smoked with my old childhood friend on christmas. We laughed about how good they were back then but kinda shitty now.

There is a reason many old strains have retired and the old amsterdam pot that was ahead of its time in the 80's and 90's are long forgotten.

I hope you find what your looking for but this is my experience when trying to take a walk down memory lane. Hope I wasn't a buzz kill.

Total buzz killer!!
Just thinking if they growing the same cuts as back then, they have most likely gotten weaker.
Only way they would be just as potent and terpenes just as strong would be if they continued to breed the lines.

Oh yeah, it's certainly true a lot of older stuff isn't as potent, etc as most newer stuff. That being said, reliable seed banks can have seeds which replicate those old strains. You can still get Skunk#1 that is exactly like I started in 1996.

Interestingly, I have some friends who say the Sagamartha BubbleBerry (original version prior to raids and a fire) pheno winner I grew from 98-00 was the best shit I ever grew. Different strokes for different folks.

Ace seeds is probably your best bet.

We use to have a connection in NE Indiana, a West Virginia fella, said he got his in Chicago weekly. When asked what the strain was, he just said it was BC Bud. Wether it was that exact strain, or some other popular outdoor commercial strain from BC, I still don't know.
It was always sticky, seeded (lightly usually), and FIRE!
I find todays potency fun, but I think it masks some of the finer quallities of the buzz.

I am having an old Kali Mist (serious Seeds) which is the purest Sativa i ever smoked. Such a special taste and high! I really can recommend this one to anyone who loves Sativas. Not called the Queen of Sativas for nothing i guess.

That 60s early 70s weed was not better but was “different” and mostly Sativa from Mexico or further south. I occasionally get a whiff of an old familiar “pot” smell. And most all weed back then made cigarettes taste funny, a weird distinctive taste. Less narcotic and more active high most always and Columbian was the hot number.

Sure, I can get down with your point of view.
Im a believer that when we all started smoking our tolerance was obviously lower and the timing of life affects our high. I started smoking as a young teen in the early 90's. I remember passing out and doing a full faceplant onto pavement when I was around 16. That was after sharing a joint of compressed, seeded brickweed with two friends. Aint no way that weed was near the strength of todays. But probably sativa, so you might be onto something.

Todays weed scene has more consistent decent weed. In the 70's in NY if u got "exotic" weed it was 3x as good as the mids that usually were around

Maui Wowie, thai stick and lambsbread seemed incredible back then BECAUSE the average potency of everyday available weed was mediocre.
