Topping/FIM

I am about to transplant my four inch pots into 3 gallon containers before going to ten gallon smart pots, my question is; when do I want to begin topping/fimming/lsting my plants? Each is about 5-7 inches tall with 4-6 nodes and I'm curious if the transplant shock would affect topping? I'm also concerned because I was planning on adding a very low dose of fertilizer and didn't know if it would upset the plant due to shock transplant I want good quality dense bud so any trimming techniques that are aimed this way would be appreciated.
