Tops of plants smell funny

Can someone please tell me why with all the plants I grow, the tops always smell funny while the bottom buds smell amazing, (like how bud should smell). I am using fox farm organic nutes and I have been getting this same phenomenon with many different strains. I'm not drying the buds too fast, so I really don't think that is the problem. All my friends keep asking me why my bud always has this certain grassy flavor and I am getting sick of it! I thought the tops of the plants were supposed to be the best but they are always the worst!

is the light too close to the tops, sometimes the main cola dries out, goes crispy etc.. if so.. raise your light.

grassy flavor/smell is a curing problem. sounds like you're not curing long enough. do you put your buds in jars?

this.. i'd think the smaller buds don't smell the same as they are smaller and don't have as much chorophyl in them, so they dry more thorough then the bigger buds.. and it sounds like you're not giving them any sort of cure, is this true? they need to go into jars for at least three weeks or longer for all of the clorophyl to break down and the buds to take on their finished flavor and smells.

Yeah, like they said. The grassyness sounds like you aren't curing it, or definitely under curing. Like, 'it tastes like a produce aisle', is what I think when I taste that. As for the top smell, that's probably just because it's the younger branches and leaves and are still in development a little, so they can't get the buds as nice as a branch that is already established pre-flower. That's the only difference I can think of there.

thanks for the replies...I grew outdoor so it's not a question of the light being too close to the plants. As for curing, I really dont think that is the issue because the entire plant has that chlorophyll smell u get right after harvest, yet some nugs (not even the lower ones, just random nugs) simply smell WAY better. I've heard from experienced growers that the buds closest to the nodes are always better, but the tops should definitely smell stronger than they do. This has happened in past grows and when I wait for the buds to cure completely, the tops still smell like nothing. I'm starting to think it must be overfert, even though they're organic fox farm nutes and that is supposed to be impossible. I followed the instructions perfectly but still I get weird results. So I guess my question is, even though all the buds are the same wetness, why would some smell way better than others?
