I was digging a new flower bed and every shovel had like 5 and a half worms in it (I was always cutting them in half)If I want top soil I go dig a hole. We have a very dark timber clay/loam they call it. Mixed with yellow sand as you go down and if you go deep enough it turns to blue clay. Comes from all the native Hickory, Oak and Cherry trees here over the centuries.
Cutting them in half only makes more! I was driving the other night after a heavy rain and the nightcrawlers were all over the road. It was mass murder and mayhem for miles. I had to quit looking at the asphalt.....I was digging a new flower bed and every shovel had like 5 and a half worms in it (I was always cutting them in half)

All we can do is too emulate nature. I've done it pretty good. I've been using earthworm castings replacing the Silt, Also Bentonite Clay, and silica sand. Equal parts of each. My Topsoil.
