tossing runts may be a bad idea

During my last grow I grew out a bunch of bag seed most from shitty brick weed and a couple seeds from a colorado dispensary. Out of the bag seed there were two that sprouted with very slow deformed growth. Now most people will advise to cull such sprouts but I decided to nurture them and go to finish just for shits and giggles. To top it off they were left in small cups (one of them I named "crazy legs" and left it in a 2 oz dixie cup. The other simply named "runt" was left in a six oz clear cup). They were eventually transplanted after reaching a foot tall two weeks before flowering. Of all the plants crazy legs was my frostiest plant and exploded after transplanting. Runt was a male :(. Crazy legs even outdid the dispensary seeds.

If time is an issue maybe this is not the best route. If time is not an issue however you never know what a seemingly weak plant may become later in life if properly taken care of.

For all you know you may be culling the next "chemdawg"

True. All I'm saying is that a seed with a deformity or stunted growth may still have good genetics. For all you know the problem could have been your propagation.

also keep in mind that I grow for my own personal use. I don't have any time frames or yield quotas to meet so experimenting is enjoyable for me even if I run into some smaller yields or mediocre results at the end of the day. However those few times you run into an unexpected keeper are pretty damn awesome

There is too much good shit out there that isn't runty to mess with the time and space of keeping runts or hermies or otherwise weak genetics.

Again, time and space not an issue...

Sure you could spend close to $100 on "guaranteed" genetics. Don't get me wrong I do too. But not once have I grown anything that hasn't been a good smoke.

Seems a lot of people look at growing as like a sport or competition or something. Some people just grow for the enjoyment like myself. Honestly money isn't an issue for me so if I was just after the absolute best I'd just buy it already grown and cured ready to smoke.

My post was for those who like to tinker and experiment because the pastime is enjoyable.

In my town there's a lot of folks living on low income so there's a lot of cheap regs/brickweed in abundance. Most people can only afford that stuff. I always ask them to save the seeds and grow a few of them out along with whatever else i'm running. I've been amazed at what can come from a seed that came from shitty weed when grown with care.

My best yielding plant came from a bag of Green Crack.. I grew out the cut and 3 S1s (from the cut) to pick and choose. I went with one of the S1s..

I've had one really great runt that came from behind... It was a Stweet Tooth 1.1

One of the Killing Fields. runts turned out damn good too..

This is why variety in seed packs is great. Potential..

genetics are the bread and butter of a good crop.. that being said you never know what genetics your bag seed may hold

This is my first grow, and I've always been a big fan of giving the little guy a chance. My roommate and I randomly selected 6 bag seeds, and 5 of them germinated. The first three to reach sexual maturity were all females, and I disposed of the other two because I would not have room for them. Now, after a long learning experience and some dedication, here are the three girls today. Only question is, will the smoke be any good. Sorry for the HPS lighting. Not willing to mess with the lighting to prove a point.

Exactly!

Goofy reference but even Jordan was a runt once in his life. Imagine if he was culled...

There are a lot of factors that could cause a runt (under developed seed, shock during germ, taproot damage... all the paper towel guys...) but the end result can potentially be great.

I just started out but already I'm having fun trying different things and growing bag seed (without culling runts) even though I can just go buy pretty much anything I want at the dispensaries.
Growing, for me, is about the enjoyment of watching these plants grow just to see what they'll do. It's kinda like golf haha (which I also enjoy).

I have plenty of space so (plant count permitting of course) I think I'll probably always have some form of experiment going on. Right now I'm playing with a re-veg clone and some other silly things just to see what I can get away with. I'll be making seeds soon and crossing stuff just for fun. Why not?

This really can be a fun hobby.

BTW, "Crazy Legs" made me laugh, my spouse named one of my first cannabis offerings "Happy Feet" haha

Impressive. Is that honestly your first grow? Did you have any experience prior other than marijuana? Most firs timers don't have such a good looking crop.

The smoke should be good. Like I said I've never had any BAD smoke from properly grown plants. it may not blow your mind but I doubt any of your buddy will turn down a smoke session know what I mean?

Lol I can definitely relate to the golf comment. I go out with my guy rob and he's always trying to correct my swing (with no luck) but I manage to keep up. I can't use a driver for the life of me. Always slices. I can hear Rob now... "D! Keep your head down when you swing! I'll follow your ball for you!"

Anyways, I feel like if I were to take growing too seriously it would suck the fun out ("Only .5 grams per watt?!?! NOOOOOOOO.........."). Obviously I still want to grow killer plants but it's the learning experience that really gets me goin. Actually, I was just talking to Heartland Hank (one of the coolest dudes you you'll meet on here honestly. Super helpful and never makes you feel like a dumbass for asking newb Qs) about aquaponics. The concept blew my mind...

Thanks Dboi. This is my first attempt at MJ, but I've been gardening for more than 15 years, and my job frequently involves some greenhouse plants. All of my garden plants are started from seed indoors, so I'm very comfortable with the veg stage, but my first attempt at fruiting tomatoes indoors was a miserable failure (at least until I discovered dwarf plants and a south-facing window). I researched everything before investing any money in the MJ project, but I didn't expect spider mites, timing/lighting errors, and other misc. stupid mistakes. I'm betting I'll double my yields with the next set of plants. The clones are beautiful.

That's awesome. I work for a chemical company and we're union so I get paid a nice wage but lately I've really been considering following a career involving botany. My gf and I have actually started worm farms. She's a chemistry, bio, and earth science teacher at the local high school so there some organization that gives starter worms to teachers for free for their classes. They multiply so fast though that she brought some home. At that point I decided I was gonna start producing castings. Been talking to the local hydro store about carrying our product. We still have a lot of work to do though.

You'd be surprised how tough marijuana is. My first crop was put through the gauntlet but still did well. I'm sure you next crop will be much better though especially with your background.

Great idea with the worm castings. I have a massive compost pile that I've been considering adding some local earthworms to.
