Trouble controlling tent conditions

Ok so my setup is as basic as it gets tent, 600w mh, 150mm outlet, small desk fan in an opening for an inlet.

Firstly the cultiv8 hygrometer comes with no instructions im confused by the indoor outdoor temps. The whole unit, meter and lcd are in the tent so why such a fluctuation between the two temps?

Also ive hit a roadblock with the wife letting me tip more funds into this project for now so if there are any what are some costless or relatively cheap ideas for humidity controll without dropping loads of cash.

More air exchange is worth trying since it's free.

Was the problem with the probe or the actual conditions in the tent?
I'm on my first grow in a long time, but I've always used relative measurements and kepty rooms within a range. What are those? What the plants say they want. Right now in the high desert, I'm keeping the ambient air temp in the room between 79f day time, 72f night. Humidity is kept between 30&40%, 24/7 (in second week of flowering OG Cheese.
Your results may vary, but as hotrod Harley said, you can't go wrong with good air exchange. I move a lot of air, but not directly on the plants.
