Trying to learn from experienced growers

Just a little back story, I have a "good" day job that pays the bills but isn't something I actually care about. I love everything about ganja and am starting to think it would be a business I would like to get into once I have some experience and do some networking. I am in the process of building my first grow in my garage and am looking forward to applying the theory/research I have gathered to actual practice. It occurred to me that it would be very cool if I could find a legal commercial grower and volunteer my time doing more menial tasks just to learn anything I can and meet some people in the biz. Any thoughts on whether or not this is a practical idea or ideally anyone in Portland, OR interested or know someone who might be? Shot in the dark but worth a try I guess. Thanks!

They're looking for people with real skills and qualifications to handle their multi million dollar inventories of plants, not amateurs.

Build your skill set, your resume and have a portfolio of pics to prove your performance and you'll get there. Best bet if you want to work with plants in a commercial level is to go work for a nursery.

U gotta break it down, theres the horticultural side and the biz side

I'd certainly recommend you get some serious hort training in, maybe even a degree or two

not many commercial hort concerns would look at you unless you have a min of 5 years hort experience

the more the better, as often even these large concerns use the NASA idea of using idle brains to do manual labor

some years back I hired an idle brainy chick, and haven't looked back ..tho she knows more of human DNA than any plant

its her lab skills and research that vital to my cause

(imo) middle class 20 something males have great issues looking into their immediate futures,

you gotta be quick to realize that you may be on the wrong path, but convincing them of this is very difficult

give yourself 5 good selfish reason to go down this road

ps hort= horticulture, means the study of cannabis, wine, hops any plant growing for consumption

Interesting feedback, thanks! Maybe in another life I would bail on my job, go back to school for horticulture and work part time at a nursery but it's just not an option at the moment. I guess I am just trying to find a way to learn anything I can and maybe get a feel for whether or not running a grow for a living is something I would want to work towards. I always thought I wanted to be a ski patroller until I did it part time in college and realized that it fucking sucked which was a valuable lesson at the time. Probably makes the most sense to keep doing research online, reading books and just learn from trial and error by doing it myself. I can respect the fact that someone growing for a living isn't trying to babysit. The thought was that I could work part time trimming or packaging or something easy and learn from people who know what they are doing in the mean time but it doesn't sound like that is all that realistic.

See if your local Community College has any hort classes. Take them - you don't have to take a full curriculum or even graduate with a degree to take the classes and learn at a Comm. College!

try out for a part time gig at a grow store. everything you are saying IS achievable :)
