Tying Stems to Promote Bud Growth?

Is it just a personal pet peeve to tie your plants main stem to a stake, or does it actually produce better buds consistently? I've read that the theory is that the plant senses it no longer needs to put any growing energy towards stem development once it feels it has strong enough support under it, and then concentrates all growing on the flowers.

No, the only reason to stake your plants up is to get them to either grow straight up or to keep them from falling over from 1) the stem being too weak and small or 2) The buds are to heavy and its falling over. I hope you're having the second problem:)
