UBs Topping vs. Nugbuckets Main-Lining - CFL Rubbermaid Grow - Nirvana Blue Mystic

What's up everyone?

Bud is back, and for my second time through, I've decided to do a little side by side comparison of two very interesting grow methods to determine which route I want to move in the future. I would have started this sooner, but I had a bunch of issues getting my seed order to clear. Apparently, the local bank I use doesn't allow any transactions overseas, so I ended up having to use a green dot card to make the order. After a few weeks of hassle, last week my order shipped from Nirvana. I ordered 5 Blue Mystic seeds and five Bubbleicious Autos, all feminized. Nirvana threw in the usual 10 mixed for free. I should be getting those in the next week or so, or at least I hope! ;)

Enclosure
I am using the rubbermaid setup again, with a few upgrades from my previous grow. You can find my first grow in my signature. I had a stellar harvest of some seriously dank bud. I grew from bagseed and dealt with alottt of issues, so I have high hopes for the second time through as I have a little experience now. Anyways, I'm using two 45 gallon rubbermaids with 2 passive intakes and 3 CPU/Videogame console fans. I will also be using a 6" clip fan on the inside. My lights are running off two surge protectors ziptied to the top lid. I have it set up for 8 lights right now, but might end up adding two more. I'm also adding mylar or emergency blanket to the inside before I start the grow. If you guys want more info on how I built this, let me know and I can make a detailed post about it. It's very easy and very affordable.

Grow Methods
Since my first grow, I have stayed very plugged into this site and a couple of others and learned quite a bit about different techniques for situations like mine. I prefer to keep things as stealthy as possible. Due to my desire for stealth, my space is limited, especially vertically. I decided to read up on the best techniques to defeat vertical limits and ended up deciding to test Uncle Ben's Topping Method and Nugbuckets' Main-lining technique. Both are brilliant in their own right and everyone should read about them, especially if you're a beginner like me. They're both relatively easy ways to score bigger, but you have to do your reading and research. I will post links to both at the end of this.

Soil Blend
1 Bag FFOF
1 Bag FFLW
3 TBSP Dolomite Lime
25% Perlite

Nutrients
Veg - Jack's Classic 20-20-20
Flower - Jack's Classic Bloom Booster 10-30-20
2 TBSP Molasses/Gal, Last 3 weeks of flower @ every 3rd watering
2 TBSP Epsom Salt/Gal @ every 4th waters

My watering/feeding schedule will really just depend on how the plants are doing. I welcome any suggestions any of you might have. I hope a few people sub to this, it should be a really fun grow and end with some awesome budporn. Here are the links to everything!

THEY CAME! THEY CAME! :mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

Checked the mail box on my lunch break and found a nice little package. That's an 8 day turn-around from the time it shipped from Nirvana, which I thought was really impressive! Anyhow, I will be making the final touches to my enclosure in the next couple of days as well as mixing my soil up. Once everything is in order, I will germ two (or three in case one doesn't germ) using the paper towel method in a tupperware container. Things should be getting underway by this weekend, I hope!

What's up all?

I spent the last couple of nights putting the finishing touches on my enclosure. I'm still having some issues getting it light-proofed, so I think the last thing that needs added is weather stripping to completely seal all of the seams from letting light in or out. And I also need to add hoods to the outside of both sides over the fan holes to keep light from shining in or out. While I was working on building it last night, I did a little measuring with lights in and was pretty bummed to find that I am not working with much space at all vertically. I thought about rigging the lights differently so they lay flat but honestly don't want to invest anymore time or money into the enclosure. I'm considering scrapping the rubbermaids altogether after this time through. We'll see how things go.

Anyways, due to my limits vertically, I will be changing up my grow method a little to try to compensate for it. Rather than do the side by side comparison, I'm going to main-line both plants and top either 3, 4 or 5 times. I need to get my screen rigged up and figure out how many open slots there will be in it. I'm thinking I'll likely top either 3 or 4 times, 3 for 8 colas, 4 for 16. This should provide me with enough room vertically to still get some big buds and will cut down on my smaller popcorn buds. I'm really just going to feel it out as I go. I also was considering adding a third rubbermaid to add some space vertically, but who knows.

I am going to start germing tonight, I think. I have everything for my soil blend and all my pots, so i figured why wait, right?!

This will probably be my last update until I have germed and planted and have some growth. Talk to you guys soon.

Peace, Love and Light!

Here's a few shots of the finished enclosure. Basically completely light proof, mylar inside and really stealthy. I'll have it set up in a heap of other storage towards the back in my basement. When my lights are on and it's dark in the basement, it's easier to see, but literally no one will be going down there in the dark. And while the basement lights are on, it's impossible to see light from it. Going to work perfectly!

I also put two seeds in a papertowel about 20 minutes ago, here's to hoping for two pops!

Peace, love and light :)

Well I did want to see the two grow comparison, but I see you aren't going to do it now.

Hope it all goes well anyway. :peace:
If I had more room vertically, I would definitely do the comparison. Unfortunately, I don't and would prefer to keep as even and low a canopy as possible, so I'm going to stick to mainlining with both.

Anyhow, I checked on the seeds this morning and both have popped and have tap roots. I'll be planting them at some point today. Going to start them in 16oz solo cups under 24 hour light until they have sprouted, then will be going to an 18/6 schedule until flower.

Pretty excited they both germinated! Peace, love and light!

What's up all? I ended up letting my seeds germinate the rest of the day and both tap roots ended up growing another inch or so throughout the day. I was happy to see that! :)

I poked holes in the bottom of two 16oz solo cups to start them in. When they're ready, I will transplant them into their final homes, pots with a 10" diameter.

I watered both cups til I got a little run off. Check back when Ithey've sprouted. Peace, love and light. ♥

Good news! Both plants sprouted today while I was out visiting family for the holiday. Humidity and temps are looking good as well. My humidity was running a bit low so I stuck a bottle of water in there with a hole in the cap to bring it up a little. The false leaves are looking slightly droopy but nothing for me to worry about. I'll keep a close eye on em over the next week to make sure it doesn't get worse. Here's a couple pictures for ya.

Just a little update. Not getting much action on the thread so not sure if I'm going to keep it going at this point.

Anyways, plants are looking real good. I added a big fan to keep temps down a bit more and made the switch to 18/6. You can see in the pics that my one plant still has the seed case on the stem. Should I take that off?20140423_155031.jpg20140423_155056.jpg20140423_155104.jpg

How's it going everyone?

I'm going to have a busy day tomorrow so here's this week's update. The plants will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and they're looking pretty good. Plant #1 is looking a little worse than #2, but nothing I'm too worried about. I had a busy few days in the middle of the week and couldn't get in here to water them. Seems like #1 took the brunt of that damage. I have no doubt that she will bounce back. #2 is looking gorgeous. Both are getting really bushy. Let me know what you think!

I decided to go ahead and transplant today. These will be their final homes for this grow. They are in the same soil mix as before.

When I got into the box today, I noticed a llittle yellowing on the bottom leaves on plant #2 and some on the new growth on plant #1. Anyone have any idea what I'm dealing with? It looks to me like it could be from drying up too much or an N deficiency. What do you think? Help please!

Have you fed at all yet? I fed from pretty much my first water on with Jacks. I think it's good stuff, though I am only on my second grow and have only used Jack's :bigjoint:. The way it worked the first time and how it's working now isn't making look for another fert. bongsmilie
