Unreliable genetics at certain East Bay MMD

I will start by saying Harborside has excellent quality when it comes to top shelf medicine (flowers, concentrates, edibles all very top notch). I also assume most of their clones are from reliable genetic lines, not over cloned etc, and I have had success with some of their strains. I also have never been bullied in the parking lot by security, like I know plenty of people have complained about.

Well, like most of the people that complain about Harborside, my legs fall asleep waiting in either of their gigantic lines. However, I don't think the long lines for the bud counters are really their fault since they do have quite a lot of registers. The lines at the clones are usually long and move very slow. The clone tenders really take their time and to be honest I think it's because they are lazy not careful (infact I have received at least 1 clone that was the wrong strain from the others of the same variety from each of the last 2 times I bought clones there.) I have found clone tenders to be cold/uncaring, without any growing knowledge, or blatantly rude also. O yeah, and their prices are pretty outrageous for the sheer volume of business they handle every day.

All of this would normally bug me but wouldn't cause me to go on a rant like this, and has been complained about by plenty of others. The thing that really ticks me off is the quality of genetics that they carry in their clones (or lack thereof). The first time I bought clones at HS I got Ken's GDP and it was solid tasty purple (but purple genetics are literally everywhere and if you can't get a decent cut of GDP in the bay then that is pretty sad). The next time I went to HS for clones I bought half White Widow and half "Mendo Afgoo". I got talked into the "Mendo Afgoo" by a really sleazy clone tender after I asked for some of their Afgooey clones. He really was trying to steer me to the "Mendo Afgoo" for some reason instead and I thought he was just trying to give some friendly advice. Flash 3 months later and the differences in the quality of the 2 strains I bought was unbelievable. Using the same lighting, organic nutrients, airflow etc, I had really big healthy white widows with big, extremely frosty colas. The WW had very thick main stems and very thick, sturdy branches. They were also using their water and nutrients waaay faster than the mendo afgoo (yes, I used top of the line beneficial bacteria/fungi, roots excelurator, carbs and enzymes, that should produce big healthy root structures). The Mendo Afgoos are really disappointing in all aspects pretty much: very thin stems, very few bud sites, small colas (that are somehow bending and breaking each branch so they must each be meticulously tied up), and small, thin(?!) leaves (for a supposedly 100% indica btw). The only good thing about buying the mendo afgoo clones were that the clone tender accidentally gave me a clone of purple (I think by the looks of it, considering I JUST grew some GDP) instead of the weak afgoo.

Soooo, to sum it up it really is way too expensive to waste all the money on lights, electricity, nutrients (not to mention tons of time) and not come away with top notch medicine. O, and they charge you like 14 bucks a clone + tax for the privilege of their random unverified genetics. Please do not make the same mistake I did and either go somewhere more reliable for clones (I heard GD in SF has great stuff I'm gonna try them next), OR just take it into your own hands and buy quality seeds from reputable seed banks, grow out mothers, and take the clones yourself.

PS: sorry for the wall of rage-text . I also would love to hear about other people's experiences buying clones from HS in oak or GD in SF (positive or negative). Also I usually just lurk forums and don't post, (due to security and not having a high quality camera) but I couldn't stay silent on this because I think it may help a patient out there that doesn't have the time or money to deal with sub-par plants. My intent is also not to just flame Harborside but to open a discussion as to the questionable nature of some of these MMD clones.

The people working the counters at harborside have always been their Achilles heal. They are the most solid dispensary around and have the best selections of cuttings anywhere in California aside from Organicann in Santa Rosa.

Dispensaries rely on vendors for their cuttings. They have to take their word for what the strains are. That goes for ANY dispensary that sells clones. It's extremely easy to get cuttings mixed up. Even the most professional will get some tags mixed up sometimes. It's going to happen regardless of where you get your clones.

One thing to remember is never let some salesman talk you into buying cuttings you weren't intending to buy. If they try to put you on some strain you didn't intend to buy, refuse it. Three months is a large investment in time, get what you really wanted. It's not a decision that should be made at the counter when you're buying them. Before you go into harborside look at their daily twitter feed. They'll list what they have that day on there. Look up the strains ahead of time. Have a couple back up strains in mind before you go in. Do NOT buy some random strain because they guy at the counter says they are awesome. Harborside has a lot of great strains on a daily basis, there is no reason to gamble on some strain you don't really know about.

That sucks you got a shitty strain. Happens to me sometimes too. It's the way of the world. Very frustrating because you can't tell there has been a mistake until it's too late to correct it. I hate that.

Better luck next time!
