Using golden syrip as nutrient?

Hey, just going to give my 4th attempt at growing im going to start them off in little pots either sitting outside or under a 60watt florescent light just untill i have enough money to buy a 400watt heat lamp.. anyway in my last attempts at growing i noticed that when it comes to nutrients if you use to much itl burn the plant alive and it will turn yellowy brown colour and fall over and its just fucked pretty much but my brothers friend told me what he does is mix a tea spoon or so of golden syrip into the water to give them abit of natural sugar and it helps them along, but somone else i know said they dont need it as they produce their own sugars... whats the haps here? thanks
