vegging time question - first grow

Hi all,

I'm just curious about how long people here veg their plants before switching to 12/12 and if there is such a thing as "too long".

This is my first grow and I obtained 3 clones of a strain called Channel+ from a local dispensary and after getting them home I noticed they were dated 8/29 which I assume is the date the clones were taken. I got them on 9/29 so they were already 30 days old at that time.

They were in small square pots (basically the size of Solo cups) and I immediately transplanted them into 2-gallon pots when I got them home... they were pretty badly rootbound with roots circling the pots quite a bit.

One of the plants never really seemed to thrive and is still pretty small compared to the other two, with less side branching, but the other two are doing pretty well I think.

At first I vegged them under 4x40w fluorescent bulbs and then I transplanted them into 5-gallon smart pots after about 3 weeks and put them under 2x600w MH bulbs. I am using Canna Terra nutrients on a 'light' feeding schedule. The flowering lights are 2x600w HPS.

Here is a recent pic of the garden (5x7 feet):

Today these plants are 92 days old and in my opinion I don't think they seem as big as I would like them. I went ahead and put them into flowering after taking several clones from the two big plants but I'm wondering if I should have flowered them sooner even though they would have been a little smaller. Is there any drawback to vegging for 90+ days under 24/7 light?

Veg as long as you want just expect you plants to double or more in size when you flower. Both up and out so make sure you dont get too crowded. I did 4 weeks from seed this run i think and mine got bigger than id have liked them to in their space. This is my current increase from start of 12/12 to now. I think im 4 or 5 weeks in.

2 gallon pots aren't a "huge" pot for cannabis plants, so they will fill them with roots the best they can and once this happens the plant growth will slow down and eventually come to a halt.

So my answer would be, if you have no time limits, let them grow out as much as they like. Let them go another month or more. and you will be able to tell when they don't seem to grow anymore. This is the time to flip to 12/12. (even though you can flip to 12/12 as soon as you want. Some people grow cannabis 12/12 from seed!)

This way you are maximising pot-size for best yield.

Anyway, kmog is also right, once you flip to 12/12 they will have a tendency to strech out to double the Veg size, sometimes triple if it's Sativa Dom. But you clearly have lot's of room in your grow space, so I'd say go for it.

Treat THEM well, and in a few months they'll treat YOU well. =)

Cheers! :weed:
