Wanna do it right the first time

the only spot in my entire house I have to work with is the attic above our garage that is well insulated and kept heated at 45 degrees in our very cold winters. due to the design of the rafters, the grow room is going to be an a frame. The footprint is seven and a half feet wide by 10 feet long and it comes to a peek at 10 feet. I'm going to use half inch plywood on the walls and the floors and insulate behind the plywood to help with heat. There's more details but may I ask, does an a frame make sense? And am I going to be chasing my tail trying to keep it warm during our cold winters and cool when the heat rises during our hot summer's. I plan on going 1,000w or I'm looking into led. Little suspicious yet. Using orca with a six plant auto watering dirt set up. Passive filtered inlets and that's what's on the board today. What about the a frame and attic. Thanks friends

Everything I've read say's attic grows are the hardest to maintain consistent temperatures in, but you know that already. i'd budget for the best 100mm insulation you can get and use it liberally. If you can build a cold store spec room you can probably beat the temps.
An apex roof will concentrate the heat in that narrow apex, so you should be able to pull a lot of heat out of there with evenly spaced vents and a powerful fan drawing it all out. Maybe box off the whole top foot or so with vents cut in and have the extraction fan at one end? Not sure if that makes sense?
I'm only repeating what's run through my head whilst considering my own impending 'loft conversion'.
Big difference in design needed between 1k hid and led I recon.

Yea, I've got some concerns. Going to use half inch plywood, insulate the crap out of it behind it in the actual rafters and Styrofoam behind that.
I'm going to exhaust inside close to the top and send it right out the roof but I thought intake should come from the bottom? Plan on that being passive. Thanks much for your help

yeah crappy description. I meant kind of like this but up in the apex with multiple vents....

Are you mainly concerned about keeping the area warm? Or does it also get hot in the summer?

Just an idea for winter time...

If you set up two adjacent grow spaces (let's say each lit by a 600 watt HPS), you could set them on opposite schedules (one dark while the other is light) and use the heat generated by one space to warm the other, and vice versa. Fan timers and backdraft dampers could make this work. Basically dump the heat from
one area into the intake of the other, then switch directions when the lights switch.

Then in the summertime you could reroute the ducts so that both areas vent out separately.

Good luck!

Good thinking. And then, move your veging clones on a trolly between the to spaces to get 24/0 with only 2 areas! Actually that's probably a pretty stupid idea, but the 2 area bit does make sense.

And could the trolley be on remote control? Awesome idea on the two grow rooms. I have an identical space four feet from the one I'm building now. I think I've scraped the plywood idea based on this forum and am going with a tent. Measuring my footprint tonight. And then I read of someone who is running an intake from a room in the house to the tent. Amazing! I think I have about a twenty foot run that I can use insulated hose and wrap it good so I don't lose anything and I'm also going with led lights. And then the stink vent out my roof. I'm going up to measure. Wish me luck! :-)

Only have two feet width going with 7' for height. If I do six feet high then I can go with a three foot wide one. Not perfect

You might be better off getting crafty with some 2x4s and plywood.... Most tents are at least 6.5 feet tall. My basement is only 6' tall, so I build "cabinets".

Originally that's what i was going to do but now I think I would be chasing a heat and cold problem, we get both of them in extreme where I live. So after a couple glasses of wine my wife agreed to an office area that I'm going to put a tent in. probably go with a 5x9 or something close to that size. Thinking gorilla but there are expensive...
And the saga continues. :-)

Have you come accross the roof qube tents? They're a s brilliant idea, and got me straight into this grow without any building or pissing about. I think they're based in the uk, Birmingham if I'm not mistaken. I've got their smaller offering which has a 120x120 footprint and fits in my space with litterally inches to spare. I could just about fit a sheet of medium sized kingspan underneath if I needed the insulation.
Quick review: apex roof, fits where no other tent will. 360° access due to ample doors. A must for a scrog. Heavy duty frame, no plastic connectors. Welding isn't beautiful but it holds it together nicely. Lovely green frame! NOT 100% LIGHT PROOF. there are a couple of pin holes here and there letting light OUT, don't know if there's any significant amount getting in. Of course, attics are dark, and that's what it's dedigned for. No excuse really for a 170 quid tent. Other sizes 150x150 and 120x240
Would I buy another? Yes, and then vent one into the other on opposing 12/12 cycles. Hmmm. I may do exactly that!

Jackpot! I'm heading upstairs later to measure but I think the large one will fit fine.
I don't remember, are your temperatures as radical as ours? They make insulation blankets I could throw over and under it to help with heat and cold. Hot damn, were in business!
