You will see vast improvement with HID lighting compared to CFL. You will want a MH bulb for veg and HPS for flower.

ideally you would want MH for veggin and HPS for flowering. but you can use either light for bolth. i would say if you are just looking to grow one plant (and only one growspace) i would get a light/ballast that allows you to use bolth MH and HPS bulbs

I switched from 350w of CFL to 250w HPS... the biggest difference I see is much better light penetration. I LST heavily and dark green foliage was only a few inches thick with CFLs, my girls are only 12 inches right now but are dark green from top to bottom. :eyesmoke:

i veg with CFLs, like 150-250 watts worth depending on what i got going, and flower with a 400 watt hps with about 150 watts of additional CFLs: UV, soft and cool. you dont NEED a metal halide, they arent as efficient as HPS.
a typical 23 watt CFL puts out around 1350 lumens, so if you have 300 watts of this lighting itll give approximately 18000 lumens. a 150 watt hps gives out about 16000 lumens, using half the energy the CFLS would.
im sure you could veg with a 150 watt hps and some cool cfls, and when budding add more cfls. Or veg with cfls, bud with the hps, but you'll have more veg light than you do budding light, so if you decide to get the hps you should still add cfls in budding.
300 watts worth of CFLS is probably even enough to grow that whole crop out, the yield may suffer a bit. but with that lighting you cant let them get too big, and youll have to train them properly.
