Most good soil mixes should be wet until a handful drips just a couple drops when squeezed. You need to use this method when mixing your soil to know exactly how it should look when wet properly. Usually, you stop adding water when the soil just starts to glisten a little and stays that way, stopping before it becomes mud. You want air to be able to reach the roots. When water fills in all the tiny crevices in the soil like with mud, air can't get to the roots. We use about 4oz of water per quart of dry soil. If the soil was totally bone dry all the way through, we might use 4.5oz of liquid per quart of soil.
