I used to have a T at the res output with a transparent hose vertically and used a marker to mark level. algae grew on it and i never put one again because i just forgot about it lol. it's just not that fuss to look under a lid, it's also nice to take a look at the roots and res to see slime larvae rot or anything. if you wanted you could just use an opaque sheet cover over the hose to shade it and prevent algae

Some people just drill a hole in the bottom of the bucket and attach a clear piece of hard tubing or pipe and run it straight up to the top of the bucket, the water line should be pretty even with whats inside. To be honest that's just a waste of time and the chance of water leaking all of your electrical components and causing a fire increases ten fold. After a while you know how much you plant is drinking and you'll only need to add water once every three days or so with most single dwc systems, takes two second to lift the bucket and check the water, save yourself the hassell and leave the water level indicator alone.

I use a piece of blue foam. Any type of Styrofoam will work. Cut a piece into a measuring stick and mark it.

I bought some GH waterfarm parts in bulk and make my own water level indicators for 5 gallon buckets. I bought the elbows/grommets, and blue tubing. Takes me about a minute to drill a hole and install one in a 5 gallon bucket. Bought the parts from Greners.
