some people say water until 20% run off is achieved and some just a few cups, even during the flush. any thoughts?

Depends on how your growing. When using containers I always lift, water until I see runoff, then lift again. When I plant in my raised garden bed I prefer to water using a small cup or watering can. My garden doesn't dry as fast s my containers so I can use less water. I also don't have to feed as much and never need to flush.

First, pick up a plant that has dry soil, and kinda remember that weight's feel. I agree, water the pot untill you see a little run off coming out the bottom. Then every day pick up the pots again, they should feel way heavier due to the water. When the pot feels light again like it did when you first lifted it, then it is time to water again. So basically, water untill run off, then let almost completly dry, then water again..... I hope that makes sense

Yes to begin with you will be watering alot less compared to when you are in your flowering cycle your plants will be drinking/eating more-but in a nutshell this seems to be the easiest way to judge when to water unless you get a moisture meter that tells you how moist your medium is.
