Watering w/lights off=cardinal sin???

Was in the local Hydro Shop today and got into a discussion over watering times.

We use a Multi-Flow flood and drain and water for 30 minutes every 12 hours in the flower phase (12/12).

The boys at the shop suggest only watering during the times the lights are on. Theory apparently is to help prevent root rot while room temp are lower.

What's your take? Water around the clock or only during the 12 hours "lights-on" period?

FYI I am in a moderate coastal climate.

Thanks for the advise.

This is really dependent on what medium your using. And style of Hydro. And if you can keep your room at a decent temp when your lights are off then i wouldnt worry about it.

In all I would say your good to water with the lights off. As for it being a "cardinal rule" I dont believe so.

I always water with lights off. All it takes is one little drop of water on that HID bulb and it will explode.

Appreciate the feedback fellas.

The plants are in 4x4 Rockwool surrounded by Hydroton pebs. Using House & Garden Nutes - full line along w/ Great White. The Multi Flow System with brain bucket is very efficent with low mainteanance.

Room has never dropped below 55 degrees. Temp Range runs from 75 during lights on to 55 lights off.

The 1000W HPS bulbs are concealed in Cool Sun hoods w/ glass cover. No water probs there.

I think I'll continue to use the same timing and look at it again in Summer when temps are higher.

i use 4" rockwool in buckets of hydroton with a drip system (top feed)

i read somewhere on the web i think arjan from dutch passion, although i thought he was a greenhouse guy.. says never to water at night because it keeps the humidity levels low. i guess when the lights go off the humidity increases that aids it.. powdery mildew root rot bud rot..

I don't know much about hydro and i wouldn't water my soil whilst they were in the dark for obvious reasons.
I did notice that your pic is called veg and your plants are in flower though:lol:

do you notice drop off in yeild with temps that dip that low???
Hard for me to say as I'm only in my 2nd grow with this system. The first batch yielded 2# of Purple Kush from 18 sites and only 1# of GDP from 18 sites. This is off topic - BUT - The GDP really struggled from the get-go. Lots of lower leaf trouble w/ yellowing and brown spots. They got real haggard by week 7.

Growing a variety of Kush's now along with Sour D, White Russian and LA Confidential. Really like the way the Lemon Kush and Master Kush are blasting up. Will post shots of the new crop next week.

Thanks again Amigos.

yeah it does.. and your probably right.. but when your trying to give steroids to bulk plants certain regimens and adjustments from normal regular conditions are benificial..like late in flower when you increase the density of the buds..humidity should be droped.. in uncontrolled environments nature isnt so forgiving..??make any sense

i have watered at night on my ebb flood and drain system for years and have never had a prob. If the plants need the water they need the water.
