What animal dug up my plant to eat the roots?

First plant outdoor for 2 weeks, went to check her an found a hole under my rabbit cage 1 ft wide by 3 1/2 foot deep! No tracks?

Somthin ate just the roots, left the top of the plant alone? dont seem like a rabbits, i was thinking chipmunks or prarie dogs? But this hole is pretty dam big an no prarie dog towns near by?

Im out on the planes ad dont have a clue. Never seen gophers around here? Seen one posum many years back?

I guess ill be putting a chicken wire cage into the ground to protect the roots from now on.

Any ideas what the hell it is?

Gofers is my guess..I been killin them things for months so they dont hurt my shit...I chopped on in half with the shovel a few weeks ago

Dam i wasent prepaird for gophers, there is pocket gopher what lives in the mid west plains, but ive never seen one.


The size of the hole it dug makes me wonder how big are they? 3 1/2 ft straight down ? Pocket gophers dont sound that big?

I don't know which animal will eat just the roots, but the mistake I made was using fish goo to fert. my plants. Dogh, every critter in the world was attracted to the sent. It would have been great if I was a fur trader lol. Never do that again!:peace:

Dam plains pocket gophers get 15 in long, so i guess they could have dug that hole.

I was using Zeba starch based moisture absorbing polymers, a miracal grow moistrure control with coco fibers for moisture retention. Proolly smelled like a buffet to a root eating gopher, lol

I was all set to go an kill a few thousand rabits for revenge, but now i believe the Plains Pocket Gopher is my true enemy.

i dont know much about the plains but down on florida we got wild hogs, who love roots, especially MJ roots. and they make pretty big holes. maybe it was somthin like that

if u really want to know what it was go to walk-mart and get a hunting scout camera, its a motion sensored didtal cam that takes pics when something crossed its path, a cheap one is like 25 bucks. i used one on my outside plants to c what friend was rippin me off.

Lost 2 big transplants last year to racoon, they like it especially if there are trace scents of organic fertilizer."bloodmeal,bonemeal,fish emulsion etc"

do you think digging a decoy hole with just some soil and fish emulsion in it for critters to inspect and see that there is nothing to eat in there would be effective at all? if theres 4 with cages and one without would animals go to the one thats with easiest access?? just a thought.

I had a hole like that last year it was about a foot deep though, didn't kill the plant. My guess was a rabbit... we got mass around here.

could possibly be rats they dig holes and chew on anything. moth balls near the base of the plant and possibly a soap bar or two and itll get rid of alot of mj eaters. irish srping it best for deer but im sure rats dont like it much plus mothballs keep away alot of things
