What does this do?

that takes your mogul base and extends it 2 3/8 in.. Example: If you had a self ballasted Feliz CFL in a mogul Base fixture, you could attach that and extend the bulb an extra 2 3/8 in. inches away from the base.

closetsafe has it right.. but its more for putting a small bulb say 400-600 watt in a 1000watt fixture. Better positioning of the bulb makes for better light distribution.

If you get everything else you need for the light there should be no need to take a medium Edison base and adapt it to a mogul base...mogul is almost universally standard for HID lights ....that just extends the bulb further from the original mogul base I'm sure there could be reasons for needing to do that
