What is limiting my growing?

Currently I veg in a smaller box in one gallon pots under 504W of CFL (~33600 lumens) at about 3" away from the plants for about four or five weeks. Then, I move them to my flowering tent with a 400W HPS. My plants look great and taste great, but they aren't as big as I'd like them. I never transplant, but was wondering if that might be the cause. I waterthe plants with fertilizer at the beginning of the week, then during the week I will usually water again with regular water. This repeats until harvest. Off of one plant I only typically yield about 1/4 - 1/2 an ounce, sometimes less.

What is limiting my growing?

1. pot size - 1 gallon of pot size for each foot you want the plant to grow

2. veg time - if you're counting from seed you'll get a bigger plant with 8 weeks veg

3. genetics - some plants are just small

So, should I be able to yield a lot more using a two 3-gallon pots vegged for eight weeks as opposed to five 1-gallon pots vegged for four or five weeks?

Yes, you'll see a difference. Not only that but vegging longer seems to produce a better taste.

I did the same thing you did and i switched to longer veg and bigger post and im happy w/ the results.

that's just another way of asking which is better, large plants or sea of green in the same space. think s.o.g. has been proven to produce more.

Thanks a lot for the replies, everyone.

My veg box only would hold two 3 gallon pots, so I am going to give that the next time around. I'm not sure how I could do SOG since I am moving the plants into another box. I will probably LST the crap out of the plants and hopefully get some better yields.

here's my question...why use 504 watts of electricity when you have a 400 watt that's less wattage and more lumens? Just use a minimum amount of cfls until they are ready for the 400. (I put mine under at 3 weeks old and are doing fine)

other than giant boy detective, its your pot size, up grade to some like 3 to4 gallon pot, more light and have u used any fert on it?

I agree with Desert Rat, its most likey one of those 3 factors that is hindering the growth of your plant. Pot size is a big one, a good rule to remember is more roots more bud. Those roots are nutrient highways the more the better. Veg time is also crucial, you probably want your plant a good 2 feet before you flower and you will increase yields. But I am sure if you increase your pot size you will have more success, also try adding some Co2. You can choose to purchase a Co2 adapter or a burner, but the cheapest method its just yeast sugar and water in a 2 litre bottle. (Youtube shows how to make a Co2 bottle)
