You can take a clone as soon as there is enough plant to take a clone from, as well as two nodes underneath to leave on. This is "topping," you're just keeping the top as a clone. All of our mothers were first cloned by rooting what was topped since it's the earliest clone possible.

How much is enough to take a clone from? Every clone should have one set of food leaves- the bottom most leaves that will yellow and die as the plant feeds off them to grow roots. Every clone will also need leaves to absorb light with. So, in addition to the bottom set, you want one other set. This top set, especially, doesn't need to be fully grown yet. The clone will have a growing shoot in the middle, forming the next set of leaves and that's all you need.

as soon as you have a branch with three leaf areas. Ive cut clones in as little as 4 weeks from planting a rooted clone.
