What size pots?

What size pots should I get? A lot of people talk about different kinds of pots, but before i started looking into all this i just thought a pot is a pot. But seeing as you guys use different things I should find out before i mess this up too badly.

I thought the clones i was buying were going to come in pots, but the guy is telling me they actually come in solo cups, I guess i thought a young clone was bigger than it actually is. What size pots should I go with? Also, which size drip pans will work best with said pots? (if you cant tell, this is my first grow)

information on my grow (not sure whats relevant so listing everything)

space: A small bedroom
light: single 600w HPS super hortilux
hood: medium sized batwing
number of clones: starting with 6
soil: FFOF + course perlite
nutrients: general hydroponics maxi grow and maxi bloom (dry nutes)

How long are you going to veg for
Well its worth noting that im doing most of this under the guidance of a mentor. I want to say that he said veg is somewhere along 30 days, pending the strain. Not sure about flowering though. but he said the best way to get the most crop for your dollar is to "bang them out really quick." so I'm not expecting giant plants (should I be expecting that?) hope that helps.

well if you veg 1 month and flower for a minimum of 2 (most strains will go longer) then do 3 gallons minimum if you don't want to transplant. if you want to transplant go from solo cups to like 1 gallon and then 3 gallom

I'd rather not transplant unless theres some reason that its vital to the operation. You say 3 minimum? Should I go with 5 just to be safe? also, what is the difference between using a bigger or smaller pot? besides soil and water amounts, obviously.

Edit: my more experienced colleague said to go with 5 gallons at minimum, there wouldn't be any reason to bigger, would there?

Getting clones into dirt is easier than when seedlings first go into dirt. Seedlings should first go into a solo cup or another micro-pot. Your clones will be going from cups to a pot.

First transplanting of the clones should be into a pot that is roughly twice as deep as the solo cup it came from. Unless you want to keep the plants small in height the first pot should also be about as wide as it is deep. This type of pot will be conducive to growing plants with that desirable Christmas tree shape. I'd put them first in a 1 to 1/2 gallon pot for 2-3 weeks until the largest bottom leaves grow well out past the pot rim. Then TP into final pot. I like 3 gallon pots to finish in because I veg them until around 18-22 inches tall so they finish around 40 inches.

Good luck, BigSteve.

Plant directly into your final container. The only reason I would do otherwise is if I had space limitations and multiple lots of plants in different phases of growth. In other words, if the veg tent was 2x3 and the flower 5x5, the veg plants would have to be in smaller pots to fit in the tent. You'll have to make a judgement call on the vegging as the time will depend on how well rooted the plants are when you put them in the pots. Three gallons ought to be about right for what you want to do. Generally, you want to use the smallest pot possible that will still retain enough water to stay moist while the lights are on.
