what soil is best?

I'm a huge fan of Roots Organic. I have been using it for years and I love the oxygen it gets to the roots. Very fluffy even after hard rain. good quality and it can be used for several grows.
Do you need to let the soil "cook" when doing this? I have read cooking it allows the beneficials to replicate, but could not find out if it was absolutely nessecary. How about if you buy bagged soil like roots organics then add amendments to make a "super soil" like sub cools, do you need to let it cook then?

yeah you want to let it cook either way. Mix peat moss, coco, castings, compost, pumice, then add amendments. with that you can make 15 cu ft of base soil for $65. About same price as 3 1/2 bags of roots. (5 .2 cu ft ).

I get 9cu.ft. of roots for $65, but I get your point, still much cheaper making your own! Thank you.

even with roots you still add casting and compost. Another $30 min. The mix I said includes that. compost and worm castings are the best thing in the world for plants of all kinds.That thread is a very good read, will def. come in handy. I will be reading through it
How much castings and compost should I be adding to roots 707? I will start making my own when I have time, but I do not at the moment. I've been experimenting with castings but wasnt sure how much would be perfect.. 10-20%?

I do about 30%. Then every 3-4 weeks I top dress castings and compost too. 1inch layer. Roots has very little of anything. It's mostly peat and perlite.
making your own vermicompost (castings / compost) takes very little time and money. Worms, Rubbermaid tote, bedding (peat , coco). Veggie scraps. Sift the castings out with 1/4 inch mesh screen. It's the best investment you will ever make.
Thanks man! That is good to know for sure. I was always reading everyone saying roots has lots of nutrients in it and feeds 3-4 weeks.. I was wondering why mine started to look hungry after only 1-2 weeks lol.
I have a couple plants in late bloom outdoors, top dressing castings would be a good idea, huh? I've been using liquid EWC in teas, but not the actual castings themselves, i'm gonna try them this time.
