Personally I wouldn't remove leaves. But I sometimes tuck leaves out of the way to get more light to the growing tops and nodes.
The leaves store energy and nutrients for flowering

Possibly a mag deficiency? My memory might be failing me atm, but I'm pretty sure MG is mobile, so perhaps it's taking MG from old growth to feed new growth?
