WHAT'S IN A [STRAIN] NAME??? Cheese, Haze, Critical.....

I asked a similar question to this one before,
but it was more aimed at charting the genetics with a system similar to the Periodic Table.
After talking with some experienced breeders it became apparent
that there were too many variables to devise a working model.
Two of three forum members also misunderstood the post completely
and gave me some abuse about 'Don't know what Cheese is...?'.

What I'd like to know is where Cheese or Haze or Critical originate???

Certain adjectives are repeated over and over in the names of strains.
Is there a pattern to explain this?
HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE -
Would a SKUNK#1 X NORTHERN LIGHTS = CHEESE
SKUNK'#1/NORTHERN LIGHTS X CRITICAL + = CRITICAL CHEESE.

I just want to understand if the strain names have meaning?
Etymologically, Philologically, Semantically.....

Or has the advertising credo of STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE taken over
and the names are nothing more than something that a sellers feels will appeal to a 17 year old surfer
with an appetite for weed and the brains of a Red Snapper....???
"Dude....".

I think you will find legitimate ones that really describe and pertain to the herb that you are smoking. With that being said there are some names that leave me scratching my head on how they arrived to that specific name. IMHO it comes down to hype and the next big thing.

Earlier, as you can assume, the names were obviously from the smells or tastes or feelings the certain strain gave you. At this point in the "scene" there are so many crosses its hard to tell. but most of them have some sort of root in some of the first really known genetics like the hazes, skunks, NLs, cheeses, etc... Some are even just certain phenos of the other names. Im 99% sure exidous cheese is a skunk#1 pheno as well as most cheeses.

So after those first few were established and the next round after it was kind of a play on words mixed with looks/colors/highs that they gave you.

Like amnesia haze. Obviously a haze and the stuff i had made me feel like i had an extra chromosome. hahaha we walked outside and forgot what we went out there for.

Look at some of subcools stuff he always makes clever names of the 2 strains he mixed to get his new one.

But yeah just think GDP X White Widow. One breeders purple widow if they breed with a parent that causes alot of purple phenos in the seeds. Another breeders granddaddy widow becaues its all white and super frosty like an old mans beard.

So its a little to do with original strain name, mixed with possible yeild or potency (like critical) along with color or specific smell. Obviously grape ape, short stocky fat solid bud producing.

Thats my take on it at least.

cheeze is supposedly a pheno found out of a pack of sensi seeds skunk number 1 from what i understand of the story, this is the real deal, uk clone, exodus cheese..

haze comes from land race sativas, mostly either mexican, colombian or thai.. if you've ever smoked a haze, you'd spot one a mile away simply by the taste and smell..

critical is an afghani x skunk cross.

but the thing with cannabis and the fact that it's illegal, plenty of breeders all offer, say for ex, a white widow strain.. we all know that greenhouse seeds invented white widow back in the 90s, and we can see what the og genetics of that ww were very easily..
ok, so now we know what greenhouse used to create their ww, but how on earth am i supposed to believe that company x, who also happens to sell a strain named ww, also used the same exact strains that greenhouse did when they created it?? we don't, exactly. at best, we could hope that they get some og seeds from greenhouse, and simply are selling f2's, silbings, made from the og seed stock.. at worst, they could be using anything to make their ww strain, and simply slap the ww name on it as it's common and people around the world all know of ww, but not many know about greenhouse in the 90s making it, nor that the og ww is now called black widow and is owned by mr nice seeds, when shanti left ghsc and went to form mr nice with neville..
the ww was only one example. another hot strain today is the girl scout cookies. as far as i know, there's like idk 3 clone only cuts of gsc's that are legit.. but now we have tons of breeders selling a version of gsc's.. how many of them are using one of the 3 or so legit cuts when making their seed version?? who knows to be honest..

ok, so what does this all boil down to?? in my opinion, anyone looking to buy new genetics needs to do their home work and try and assure that what they're dropping their hard earned money on is the real deal.. it's not always easy to get to the bottom of these things, but ask questions and see what others have to say about the strain you're looking into..
