What’s lights? for 8’ x 7’ Room w/ 8’ ceiling 24000 btu AC

Hello,

I am designing the light set up for an 8’ x 7’ room w/ 8’ ceilings for a flower room which will be on a weekly crop rotation (9-10 week cycle for each plant). I will have a 24000 BTU AC and access to as much power as necessary because the room is directly next to the breaker box. Room can be wired to specification.

Room will enclosed w/ CO2. Id prefer to keep ballasts out of the room. Idea is to maximize the space with as much light as possible for yield. Will be growing in organic soil roughly one plant per sqft. Budget is not a concern if it improves yield. I was think of some combination of DE HPS 1000 or 600 Watt, and/or 315 w CMHs. Would appreciate guidance on bulb, reflector, and ballast along with light placement and distance to canopy. Light bulb, reflector, and ballast manufacturer along with maybe a site to purchase would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.!!

Just to add done several grows with 1000 Watt HPss bit it’s been like 5 years and I am a little overwhelmed with all the new technology, thanks very much again for any help!!

The new DE 1000s need to be 36” above the canopy . Givita style are good for 4x4
The new 315 CMH are very good lights
I wouldnt push them pass 3x3 in flower.
10” is enough space above the canopy
Phillips have the best bulb .
If I where to switch out my de 1000s I would replace each one with 3 x315
I’m about to try Orca film (look it up)
Sentinel makes very good controllers .
Can not say enough good about my Quest dual 105 .

PS
I have a 3.5 ton mini split, almost twice the size of yours , I run 4 DE 1000s in that room. I definitely wouldn’t want to try to run 4 DE 1000s with a 2 ton, just because of the AC I say use 315 n don’t look back.

Any thoughts on LEDs? Are the COBs worth the investment?

I run 8 de 1k’s in a 13.5’x30’ room. I cool them down with 2 8” intake fans right now during the winter, as long as temps outside are at least 55 F it will cool the room with ease. My intakes blow directly on the lights and they are cool to the touch. My ballasts are mounted remotely in another room (x4 phantom commercial,x4 Growlite AC/DE kits.) My ceilings are 8’ as well (well like 8’8”). I’m going to liquid cool the room after this run but have no problem cooling in the winter months in my area. If the room you are setting up in is prone to getting hot on its own (like a garage) then you will need considerable cooling to run de’s.

315w cmh’s are good lights I have two I veg with. Very little heat and great light output, also a very good option for lower cooling cost. If you can cool them I would go for the de’s if not I would go cmh.

Chiming in since you asked about LEDs:

You could light that 8' x 7' room with anywhere from 1700 watts to 2800 watts (you mentioned CO2) of high performance LEDs like cobs, strips, quantum boards, whatever... Not only will they last longer without need for bulb replacement, and output much less heat per light produced, but they also output a much more "complete" spectrum than most HID technologies can.

LEDs also occupy a lot less space and can usually be placed closer to the plant canopy than HIDs.
