What's New In The 2012 Garden??

Hey folks -
Just ordered up a bunch of heirloom vegtable seeds - I'm going to be going with 95% organic heirloom varieties this year of many veggies. Especially looking forward to the Black Krim tomatoes, Santa Fe Grande and "Beaver Dam" peppers, Minnestoa Midget melons and French Breakfast radishes... all old-school heirloom vegtable seeds that have been around since the 1800's or later.
Also, looking to buy some hop rhizomes. Friend of mine grew some last year with great success and gave them to another friend to make homebrew... turned out fantastic. So I'm doing some hop shopping... $5 a rhizome... sound like a price for something else?;-)
Also be doing LOTS of perennial and annual flower seeds - as per the wife's instructions!! Nothing to crazy though... at least not yet.

Anyway, just curious as to what interesting things you guys and gals are putting in the soil this spring.

Hope all your plantings come up happy and healthy.
~peace~

Ohhh mugan, that reminds me, I'm growing a new papaya. In addition to the Maradol/Carribean Red I've got these Costa Rican papayas, they're smaller and more melon shaped(like a big acorn squash, I guess). The flavor is supposed to be excellent.
It froze this year tho'. It sucks. I even covered them up and everything but they still froze like a month ago and now the tops have rotted away. A couple of them I have topped the dead off and they seemed to have made it. This one I did it to started to rot all the way down so I had to top it about two feet from the ground.
I should have fruit by May/June.

kewl kewl , i luv papayas but am new to them , i dont even know what am growing but i have a pic , in the Rproject (a while back) , i know how sensitive they are , especially there roots, that's why it takes so long for me to get them to germinate, cuz i have to do it out side where its gonna grow, soo the heat drys the spot out daily . its so hot in jan here ;( . so i can see how the cold suck

Yeah, the cold dries it out just as much as the heat does. When it gets cold here the humidity drops and I have to water the plants everyday. Today is 43% but it is supposed to go back up to 70% tomorrow and 80% the next day and that's all the cold weather we'll get probably. It's February pretty much.

I'm putting in some Kamo eggplant this season. 3-4 inch round puple balls of goodness. Best eggplant in the world in my opinion. Very tasty and firm when cooked. If that kinda slimy texture puts you off then this is the eggplant you want in your eggplant parmigiana sandwich. Hands down

just about any thing herb wise that can be grown in a container so that if I chose to keep a mother plant of those herbs in soil or in hydro I can clone put into pot of soil, let it veg for a couple or few weeks then sell.

Hello everyone I see there's a lot of houligans in here, well whats new in the garden this year EVERYTHING!! We finally bought our own property and have room to have a garden and so far iv'e got cherry tomatoes going, sunflowers, lettuce, basil, oregano, coriander, green beans, yellow beans, zucchini and last but not least purple cone flower all in seedling form and awaiting the leaving of the snow.

Some Green Bell pepper seeds, pomegranite seeds, pinapple seeds, st-johns wort seeds and pansy seeds currently germinating.

And I will be adding Tobacco seeds 4 strains, purple tomatoes seeds and some vanilla planifolia orchid seedlings next pay day.

Also Currently experimenting with growing water melons in a small space, Vertically ;-)

Anyone have other siggestions, I'm looking at loofa pretty neat stuff and could be good side income.

This is interesting stuff Iv'e been looking at this kind of side money with my herbs I got going, Toolage if you don't mind i'm gonna pick your brain a bit I have some questions in regards to this.

How much do you usually sell your plants for
What kind of client bases do you sell to, I was looking at farmers markets and selling fresh cuttings to gourmet restaurants or just posting a classified add.
And roughly how well established are they before you flip em?

Sorry for all the questions the wife and I are looking at exta side money jobs for me during my off season, and I love gardening just about everything it's like my therapy.

$3 to $4 is usually the going price for people who grow plants at home to sell

You can sell it online, you can post adds to sell it, sell them on the farmer's market, some restaurants will buy live plants since there are some out there that will buy them because they prefer live plants over pre-picked.

well I would prefer to grow them in hydro because they can grow faster and you can take big cuttings and have them root easier over soil and when you plant into soil you veg them in a 4 inch pot for 1 to 2 weeks before selling them. I prefer around 2 weeks.

Its ok. Depending on the space you have bonsi trees and lucky bamboo plants can make good money to since in 1 year you could turn over around 6 lucky bamboo plants from 1 stalk if you bought it at the store.

Nice Toolage, Thanks for the info I've been playing around with my new homemade bubble cloner and putting different things in there tomorow I'm going to go stick some of my Japanese maple trimmings from the other day to see if I can't root em and bonsai them. But from what I see grafting these trees onto rootstock is the easiest way to propagate em or from seed which i'll have to keep next year I didn't think of it last year.

+rep to you for the great Info and prompt reply thank you!!

I've been thinking about getting a Japanese maple bonsi tree and clone it in my aero cloner but I'm scared of messing up and have it die on me since a small one cost almost $30 for it and right now I am in the process of trying to scrape money together to build 3 things for my room since I can't find any thing that is perfect for the space I have to work with.

I might grow my bonsi tree under a light to make sure it gets the right amount of light.

I'm glad that my info can help you out and thank you for the rep. :)

I know what you mean about how expensive those tree's are I paid 80$ for a 2yr old standing at 4-5ft, it was my wedding tree and I loved the amount of guest who came up to us to ask if it was MJ lol even if the leaves are blood red. But I really dont want to mess it up because it's just that our wedding tree, so I might be waiting till it spits out seeds next season then for them to sprout next yr instead.

I'm also in the same boat money/room size is tight, So I macgivered everything in there including my 400w which I didn't make from scratched but modified it heavily to work with my small space, still debating going to 250w cause the heat can get up there on a warmer day outside. I'm very big into up-cycling anything into something more usefull then garbage and bluebox filler, If you need a hand figuring out some stuff or just need some creative brainstorming let me know. Like I said I'm currently doing the same thing lol.

That's not encouraging , from what I read they have a hard time sprouting enough new roots to support itself nutrient wise, they apperently do good for a month or two then pass on. From seed or grafting onto rootstock are the two most successful methods that I found so far. But thank you for the experienced comment in regards to cloning these beautiful trees.

I haven't tried it but how about Japanese maple trees from seed? My JM throws plenty of seeds. Like I said , haven't tried it but why can't you plant the seeds? Might be some trick like heat or cold or something but you're right, those puppies are expensive

2 ways I found out I'm sure there's more, first the easy way plant them somewhere in good soil in the fall and wait for them to rise next spring or put them in your freezer for I think at least 120days they need a cold stratification period prior to germinating, this is the same with many of the tree species that grow somewhere with a winter.

I think next year ill be trying both methods kinda like a 50/50 to see which works better.

Well I am growing in my room so my mj grow box is where the closet area is gonna be since its out of the way and out of mind.

I ended up having to get rid of 3 things in my room because 2 of them didn't fit the space any more and 1 of them broke. I would buy stuff that is pre built for my room but I don't like the though of press-board built stuff and $100 for it is stupid. I had to buy a bunch of tools and stuff for my tools like drill bits and such just so I can build my own things. I know it cost more money then if I was to buy the pre built stuff but in the end I will be using the tools to build a new shed and such so it makes up for the price of the tools just to build the 3 things that I want. I also plan on building a thing for out side my window so that I can put solar panels on there and run some stuff off of it.
