Ok I have a question, but please let me preface it with the following:
No elitist "thou shalt not" replies please.
I am, for the purposes of this thread, not interested in the "ideal" time to harvest, or the "ideal" way to dry etc. This is for all the noobs who are on their first grow, their own stash is empty, and they're simply impatient and want to "test" one of their plants.
That said, what is the earliest that you can snip a bud, pop it in a bowl, and have it actually "do the job"?
There are several stages of growth, as well as the in-between stages. Obviously, a seedling isn't worth a damn but how about once it starts flowering? Say it's been flowering for a week, or two weeks, or whatever... Is there somethig to look for that signifies that there's at least sufficient maturity to get a buzz?
For example, my buddy has a couple plants (CFL grow) that are looking pretty good. They're in flowering stage, and clearly going to produce a decent size harvest when the time comes. The problem is that the town he's in is basically dry and he is willing to be a bit impatient and snip a bud or two early, as he has sufficient quantity that the missing buds won't be missed in the grand scheme of thngs.
Wow - I guess I kinda rambled there. LOL
TL;DR version:
Anyway, from a scientific/technical point of view, when does the plant actually start producing enough THC to make it worth snipping a bud?
What factors would be considered in this decision?
First week of flowering? Second? Varies based on the strain? Size of bud as compared to the plant's overall size? Color variation? I'm looking for something kind of tangible to point to and say "ok, if you're that impatient, at least wait until such and such event occurs or such and such becomes visually apparent."
Basically I'm trying to convince him that while it's ok to be a little impatient (totally understandable lol), it would be better to wait until there's (chemically speaking) enough in whatever is going to get snipped to make it (the resulting bowlful) worth the amount of stress that the plant will undergo. I mean, there's no point in snipping something that is essentially worthless due to immaturity.
Any experienced pros are welcome to chime in with their own "minimum requirements" for taking their first snip off a plant.
