I moved around a bit and kind of got out of the scene for some years. Now I'm back to growing and feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the strains from US breeders I'm seeing in the US seed banks. I used to order frequently from UK banks and I've been through some of the big names like White Widow, Durban Poison, Northern Lights, etc etc. But wanting to start ordering domestically, I've seen a lot of people vouch for banks like James Bean and I see they're just organized by breeder and I just don't know any of these names. Sure, I've been hearing names like Bodhi enough to get the impression they're well respected. But when I start looking through various breeders, all these strains are just "this x that" with names I've never heard of, and I think... has that much changed in the time I've been out of the loop, or are people in the US just on a massive pollen chucking kick?
In my experience, stabilizing a new strain can take some serious time and effort. So I'm a little skeptical when there's a dozen crosses for any given strain. I know there was never a guarantee that when you bought a strain you were actually getting that strain and not just some random seeds an unscrupulous breeder slapped the name on, so consistency was always a bit uncertain. But with these newer strains, if I'm buying the same beans from the same breeder, are the strains at least stable enough that I can expect to get roughly the same genetics as the next guy who ordered them? I guess I really just always preferred picking a strain off leafly and then going out to find some beans, and I was never terribly concerned with who the breeder was as long as I knew they had a reasonably decent reputation. I've had some good luck finding names I know on Southern Oregon Seeds. I've looked around North Atlantic's site and seen some familiar strains around there, too. But I'd love some pointers on navigating the world of US breeders and the massive array of options to choose from.
