when do you start counting time in the flowering period?

I start counting down the day I switch to 12/12. However, I don't really use time as a guideline for the ripeness of my crop. Look/smell is what determines if I am ready. I guess the point is counting how many days you have been flowering is irrelevant unless you are looking to pass the info off to someone else. The plants will show you when they are ready, they do not adhere to anyone's schedule.
