When does "X weeks to flower" start?

When people say a strain takes 8 weeks to flower, does that start when you switch to 12/12 or when they start showing flowers? I switched my lights to 12/12 almost 9 weeks ago but they took almost 2 weeks to start flowering... Probably have about a week left, so I'm guessing the count starts when they show flowers. Is that right?

Hey dude, standard is flower starts when the lighting regime changes. Usually in the first week not much happens then week two and three pistils just explode.
To get an idea if your ready look at the buds and if they look ready to smoke you're pretty much there

8 weeks starts when u flip them. That's why I like those indices. Sativas take longer

I used to count from the flip but as you said they don't throw out pistil the next day! My plants take a week to throw pistil so I just add one week to my flower time. It used to take them 14-21 days to start but I added extra p and k the first 3 weeks and they go nuts.

Try this for a red it will give you a little more understanding of the phases!

from the flip, but as qwiz pointed out on a mature plant (alternate nodes/preflowers) an immature plant can take longer to start flowering

3 clones, 2 phenos of Somango Widow from Advanced Seeds, they say it takes 55-60 days. One pheno is a nice dense indica and I'll probably cut it in a few days, but it's about half as tall as the other 2 plants with a lot less bud since the other 2 plants got most of the light. The other pheno is more of a sativa and most branches only have white hairs and clear trichs. It's been 64 days since I flipped the lights.

Honestly, I should have flipped them about a month sooner than I did...

The Sativa may take quite a bit longer.....I have a very Sativa pheno of Pineapple express that does 14,,, and that BITCH is straight off the hook! your looking at her in my Avatar at 9+!

starts at flip i have a indica dom and she is @ 5 weeks pistils all over. and my sat doms are barely starting to flower... may go 16+ weeks for me

14-16 weeks? Seriously? At least I can harvest the indica soon. I broke off a little bud, dried it, and smoked it. It's a pretty nice high and smells a lot more like mangoes than I expected. Really looking forward to smoking it once it's cured.
