more then any amount of clf can do. Can't really say how many plants under a light because you can lift the reflector to get more coverage area(more plants) and lower to get more lumens on the plant(least plants). I've done a 400hps before sog and i got a total of 3/4 lb.

I hot my 400W HPS for 135 S&H included. from highteckgardening.
A had one 2 foot tall female with 4 42W CFLs and 2 or 4 32W CFLs.... I got less than a half :(
400W can do up tp 15-20 plants if you squeze the. 10 comfortably

Go with the HPS....its a much more effective light for the money...I am a converted CFL user myself and put off getting one because I thought I could do it with CFLs also....I did OK the first go around but the second time I ran into a heat issue because I kept adding CFLs to get the lumens up...also Im learning its more about how many square feet of space you have not so much as to how many plants you have.
