Why Buy Feminized Seeds?

As a long time grower, I find the cost of feminized seeds to be a huge rip off.

If you really want to grow quality plants from the first grow you need to read/study first. To this day I pull out a book I bought some 10 years ago Indoor Marijuana Horticulture The Indoor Bible.

I find it really good bathroom reading, as I learn more with each reading.

Page 261 is titled Feminized Cannabis Seeds. In 1998 Dutch Passion introduced Feminized Seeds, and while many growers had 100% success it soon became apparent that environmental factors play a role on an individual's success.

You can increase the number of females from non-feminized seeds by:

Increasing N increases females

Lower P increases females

Low temps increase females

High humidity increases females

More BLUE light increases females

Fewer hours of daylight increase females (~14). So much for growing under 18-24 hours.

Any form of stress increases males

So, if you spend the money for feminized seeds and do the opposite of these tips, you will reduce the percentage of females.

With fems you usally always get a female plant. With reg beans you have the chance of getting a better mom than the original(not always)
And of course males for breeding....

How do I say this politely... You are wrong. Feminized seeds are female regardless - that is a list of things that can supposedly influence normal non feminized seeds, they have no bearing on feminized seeds. You can stress a feminized seed into producing some feminized pollen sacks but you can't make a legitimate feminized seed male by reversing any of those methods listed. That is not what the page you read suggests.

They have actually revised that page since you purchased your book. Keep in mind that most marijuana horticulture books are NOT reference/text books - they are NOT heavily peer reviewed before publication and often print hearsay. The later version of the same book has different information listed regarding feminized and intersex plants - information that coincides with standard horticulture rules/practices.

I think feminized seeds are benificial to someone like me who has a small grow and doesn't want 2 months to go down the drain without a single female. It happens when you only grow a couple of plants.

I routinely buy feminized seeds. I have never had a hermie and never had one fail to germinate and sprout. If I buy 10 feminized seeds, I get ten female plants. If I buy 10 regular seeds for half the price, I get half the female plants, plus I have the bother of growing them enough to sex them then culling them out. For me, regular seeds are like dial up internet.

this is exactly what I have been asking I got that same stuff from the same guy out of grow book and a lot of people are like no nah uve never heard of lower temps and hours increasing females
