Why HPS to start with?

For my first grow, I ordered a 400w MH...knowing that the higher kelvin would be beneficial for the veg. But as I read these forums I see that a majority of people are vegging with HPS. What am I missing here? Why is there a preference towards HPS over MH?

I would guess that since HID is expensive when people buy they get HPS because that is What plants need to bud to full potential. Plants will veg under HPS, just not as well as with MH. You should do what i did and just get a switchable ballast. They also make conversion bulbs

the hid Have lots of blue lumen's which the plants need and thrive in during the veg grow. hps have more blue which in turn is great for the bloom..

Many people just use an HPS bulb for the whole grow. Go get a MH conversion bulb, and do it that way. It works for me.

What I will probably do is order a MH bulb with a lower Kelvin temp for my flowering stage. I've seen 3000K for sale online.
Thanks for the replies peeps!

I have a 400 watt MH.......HTG Supply has a 3000k bulb by agromax I believe. Ive been using it all the way through and it is working great.
The spectrum is in the yellow, orange, red with a pretty good dose of blue.

I'm surprised this hasn't been said, but HPS lights supposedly give 130-150% the lumen/watt as a MH light. Basically, HPS lights are more efficient. So either way, you're good to go. Although I've just been using a 400W Hortilux HPS bulb and it's been doing great for veging and flowering. With the enhanced spectrum without the loss of lumens they're great.

Plants will veg better in hps than they will flower in MH. Does that make sense?

Using a 400w HPS from seed to harvest will produce better results than 400w MH from seed to harvest, at least I think? It would be interesting to do a controlled experiment for fun. ;)

But yea, MH is better for veg

using hps will give u more bud weight but using mh will give u really tight buds (not to say u cant get tight buds wit hps because u can )....u'll see the the best buds will come from a combination of lights .. but when u aint got the means, u roll wit what ya got. experience will get you boom bud compared to equipment.. so get them goin !
