Why use 1000w bulbs?

I've read that plants get more lumens from 600 watts at 18" away than they do from a 1000 watts at 24" away.

Even if it's the same what is the purpose of going to a 1000 watt bulb when you can simply move the 600 watt bulb closer?

Other than a larger footprint, can someone please explain to me the advantage of using a 1000 watt bulb over a 600 watt bulb?

Thanks

Don't know if what you said is exactly true; but 600 and 800 watt systems are at least slighly more efficient in terms of lumens/watts, I believe. So five 600 watt systems might be more efficient than three 1000 watters and/or five 800 watt systems more efficient than four 1000 watters.

However, higher wattage systems should penetrate better.

Thanks, but I don't understand how you can have better penetration with a lesser amount of lumens reaching the plant.?

It's not a lesser amount of lumens reacher the plant.
Why would you keep your plant 2 feet away from the light? And compare that to a plant 18 inches away. That's a fucking stupid test
18 inches is preferable, some people keep it 12 inches away.
A 1k 18 inches away has more lumen output than a 600 18 inches away.

Why does it have to be 18" away?
I ask because my plants tops are always closer than that to the bulbs.(1000')
The answer to why use them is yield.

I personally keep mine anywhere from 18-12 (I use a scrogg method so I kind of have control). A few of my friends had some pretty bad bleaching and stress issues keeping their plants too close to the light. I've been told 18" is supposedly the best, but I know 12" provides no lumen loss and if you're worried about heat you still have your tops a safe distance away.

If you are growing short plants you are better off with a 600w.

If you have tall conical plants and keep the 1kW light just as close as the 600w light you will have better "penetration" to the lower terraces of branches as you simply have more lumen.

Chances are you would start with both lights further away than this illustrates but it shows how the lower bud coverage is a bit better. The lower areas of the plant can often have a larger surface area than the higher more vertical buds so with larger plants penetration can make a bit of a difference.

Ok, thanks. Most of the pics I've seen look like the lights are at least 2 or 3 feet away. I guess I just assumed that you couldn't get them much closer.
