Its Basically because when presidential candidates want to gain votes or power they create a side diversion and make it seem like its a problem that they are willing to tackle. Its all Propaganda and unfortunately it works enough to fool a lot of people.
It is hard to tax, thats the main problem. If you notice the people being busted don't pay there taxes. (Good lesson to RIU members).
Also the problem with all the non factual research that had been approved over the years with negative results turns out false, only put the plant back in the closet.
People still believe all the fake facts. Even though they have been proven false.
It is a real good question , why is it illegal? The answer is very complex but simply put its a 2 part: (1) Its not {where i live, understand the LOCAL laws} & (2) They have connected Crime with the drug.

Nice video Carne, the big drug companies also have a lot of people who speak out against marijuana, they would be out of business if everyone relied on weed for everything.
The laws are ASS backwards, How can it be a gateway drug if on the drug schedule its a schedule 1 drug, making it worse than anything? its suppose to be worse than haroin or cocaine. A schedule 1 drug can not have any medicinal effects, so how can the government allow medical cards and still keep it a schedule 1 drug? Why dont they remove it from the list like tobacco or alcohol? Its a big freaking Conspiracy. It should be legal, and even if it never gets there, I believe in my own life, God created it, its just as amazing of a creation as life on earth. Its a beautiful thing, and there will always be Haters.

Marijuana is illegal because back in the day many big business men realized that using marijuana they could produce a superior version of what they were already making (paper, textiles, rope, plastic, bio fuel, medicine, etc) and got together to try and make it illegal so they wouldn't have to compete with it or have to remajiggar their business and factories (which would cost money). So they got their buddy to make a tax stamp required and then never printed any. Racism and red journalism were used to convince the common people that it was evil. And over the years people grew up beliving the lies, told their kids the lies, who told their kids the lies, then Nixon, and Reagan, etc etc. now here we are learning the truth all over again.
