It can be a lot of work, but thats up to you on how much you want it to do.
I built my Arduino to monitor all 4 boxes/tents for temp, humidity, pressure and I think something else the sensor does too but can't remember atm.
Of top of my head I'd guess at about $40 (Canadian)...Arduino, relay board(s), 4 sensors, 8 input board (4 used) and some wire and soldering...done.
Then just hook up relays to your fans and you should be all set.
EDIT: Oh ya and you can add Wifi boards/shields, screens and so on.
