Wikileaks

Some people think Julian Assange should be arrested and tried as a terrorist, or as a traitor. Some think he is a hero of truth.

What kind of opinions are out there?

Of all the damning evidence Wikileaks has uncovered the US government until this time have been fairly benign in their actions until the other day. Wikileaks is preparing to release 5GB of leaked info from a Major US Bank, now all of a sudden the government wants to play hardball. Mr Assange is now wanted by Interpol, and Joe Lieberman got Amazon to stop Hosting wiki and has called for all US Corporations to stop hosting the servers. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/dec/01/wikileaks-website-cables-servers-amazon

After Amazon stopped hosting Wiki it took a couple hours for a new host to be found, now they have an extra mirror site. Karl Denninger over at http://market-ticker.org/ sent this message to Mr Lieberman....

Big balls you have there Mr. Lieberman. What you gonna back it up with? A few missiles? Somehow I doubt it, considering that you'd have to start launching them into nations that aren't exactly hostile to us - but sure do seem to be hostile toward attempts to censor these guys.
Oh wait.... you mean your bluster was all hot air?

That would be "Blow Me" as Wikileaks' response to Senator Lieberman and DHS.
Now what winky-eye?
Further, I am compelled to again ask: Exactly why is it that you're ****ed now when the other leaks previously published were much worse in terms of what they exposed? It isn't that Wikileaks says they have 5gb of data from a major BANK to leak, is it?
(PS: If you think getting cute with the DNS will stop them, it won't. I suspect you're dumb enough to do it though, which is simply going to cause them to move things into a format you can't trace or interdict at all, or into a TLD you can't touch - and there are a bunch of them. If you don't understand how and why this stuff works please call someone who does so they can explain it to you before you make further fools out of yourselves.)
You gotta love it, the folks at Wikileaks are poking the caged animals with pointy sticks. The stuff we have seen from Wikileaks so far is nothing when we find out what the banks have been up to. The US Gov't knows what is to be leaked and they are scrambling for damage control. Lets see what the next week brings.

Opinions? Rants? Outrageous debate?

I think it would have been cooler if he did it to a different country. Im more interested in what Iran or NKorea or China are up to. We arent the only country running around spying on everybody and talking shit about other diplomats. Assface could have used a little more discretion with all those files. Plus he is throwing away his bargaining chips by making those documents public. I bet there are a lot of people out there (not just americans) that are fucking pissed at that dude. Itll be interesting to see where it all goes.

I have been reading some of those cables. Some of it is actually pretty funny.

I'm surprised this topic took so long to come up. My opinion: Assange is a fucking hero, as is Bradley Manning. Dumb move confiding in Adrian Lamo though.

He would be a hero if he released all the horrible stuff our ememys are up to. I don't know about you guys but I still Love America. All countries are engaged in very shady stuff, I hope we get to see this guy's life be disasembled by the CIA. People have been killed for far less than this. For the good of the country he needs to be taken out...in front of his loved ones. No but seriously someone needs to end this guy preferably with a silenced pistol in broad daylight.

The fact he is still alive after the last thing leads me to believe he is being used by the CIA or government to leak specifically what they want him to leak. A thought to consider.

If you think he/wikileaks has only released stuff about the US, you really aren't paying attention. At all.

I decided to address your post in a bit more detail, although I generally avoid the politics forum on this site, since it is filled with "people like you" (make of that what you will).

So, you believe he is working for/being used by the CIA? And yet you want to see him assassinated? In front of his family, no less.

Assuming he is working willingly for the CIA. That means you applaud the death of a CIA agent, working towards US interests?
Alternatively, if you assume he is being used by the CIA unwillingly, then surely it would be them who are endangering lives by passing this information on to him, knowing it would be released into the public sphere.

Either way, if he is working for the CIA, that would make them the bad guys here (if you take the stance that the leaks are bad, of course).

You may also be interested to know that the Iranian president shares your conspiraloon views.

For too long there has been hidden from the light of day all sorts of egregious deeds, hidden behind spurious claims of protecting national security. There are traitors and war criminals and corrupt officials scrambling to shut Wikileaks down...I wonder why? I'm with Daniel Ellsberg on this.

Let the sunshine in.

About time. Now the people can see what the government is all about. The pushback from the gov seems a little odd doesn't it? Wasn't the first leak about secret military crap? They weren't asking for his head on a stick then, were they? Now if only wikileaks could get some documents about cannabis being safe to consume...and that it could possibly be the best cure-all drug of all time...I think wikiman would be dead within the hour.

Everything should be disclosed. Certain shit like nuclear weapons systems should be kept SAFE and SECURE so crazy people can't build them.

I'm glad I live in this time, with cell cams and instant sharing capabilities, the shady shit governments do simply can't be kept as secret as they want anymore.

Anybody see that R Senator call the guy a "terrorist"?

lmfao - howbout we use their own fucked up TSA quote for this shit "if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear", assholes.

Technically he is guilty of espionage according to US law.

The law provides for people obtaining and disseminating information that would be harmful to the US.

I dont think this is a freedom of speech issue because #1. He isnt a US citizen and therefore not subject to the bill of rights and #2. This isnt speech, it is the distribution of secret documents obtained illegally.

If the US doesnt do something then technically it is giving up the right to protect any documents leaked this way.

A couple weeks ago he was "wanted" for questioning in a child molestation case. I laughed at that supposed bit of "News". They will say and do anything to discredit truth.

If he is not a US citizen then US law does not apply to him. If the US government "goes after" him, then it will only further and give alot more publicity and legitimacy to his cause, and alot more people would be wondering, "Why is the government after this guy, they truly must have some shady stuff to hide". I am all for someone trying to expose people for what they do behind the closed curtain. Maybe he will actual keep the government honest, but I doubt that.
