he needs something for veg first so, its either Metal Halide or some High Output Florescents. trust me the HO FLOR work GREAT!!! they are not that hot, you do not need an air cooled hood for them. they will DEF get the job done for veg. as far as flowering, i hear CFL's will work for 2 plants. as far as wattage, a watt is a watt, same amount of electricity on the bill. and you do not need as many!! you could even possibly get a 275w HPS for flowering. i have very different opinions on small area gardens. i wont voice them here, but good luck!!

Being new to this I've yet to develop any real sterotypes. (Although I've made up my mind about flowering with HPS.)

All you really need to do is click the grow journal link in my signature to see what CFL's positioned in an intelligent way will veg you out to. In the month it takes to get you there, figure out your flowering plan and read, read, read. Thats what I did at least.

It's all in my first couple of posts but I think I had (have) 12 bulbs 65k and 55k bulbs, totaling over 300 watts for 3 plants in a 3x3 space.

CFLs will work. They're great for veg but only so so for flowering. You need to position them all around the plants to get good results, especially when flowering because they have no penetration. I agree that you want at least 100W of CFLs per plant. I'd use four 42W bulbs for each plant. One above and three surrounding the plant on the sides.
